If you've updated your ps3 or buy a new one (within the last year or so I belive) the other os option is no longer available.

So far as i know that was the only way to do it was with linux.

There might be a way to downgrade the firmware to the early versions that had it. If you really want to check online for ways to load old firmware on to the ps3. However you would not be able to use it online with the official sony services without upgrading the firmware which eliminates that feature.

One possible alternative is to do realtime capturing. You can do it with the hauppauge hdpvr and component cables however you will only be able to do dolby digital tracks as it doesn't encode dts.

You are better off using a computer bdrom drive for ripping. Dvdfabdecrypter has a free ripper but isn't updated as frequently as the pay version is (but its still updated just delayed). Then there is the payware anydvdhd that works with bluray as well.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

The Hauppauge suggestion is a "you CAN do this but you SHOULDN'T do this. I'm just mentioning it because it is possible to do it" kind of suggestion.

Trying to rip or copy BD discs outside of a PC is really kind of crazy, to be blunt.

As far as obtaining a bit perfect copy yes you are 100% correct.

I'm just trying to throw out as many options as possible for the poster.

I'm sure there are people that try capping high def in standard def. Remember people do weird stuff

But I've gotten pretty good results doing that sans the dts limitation. In fact I dubbed a few of my hddvd discs that way with my xbox 360. Realtime is not ideal but is quick and dirty if you have a slower computer and don't want to do hours and hours and hours of encoding.

I do agree ripping is the best option but there are alternatives.
