Today I made a 62 Minute VCD by Encoding an .Avi into an Mpeg1 using Nero & then burning onto a an 80 Minute CDR. If when using Nero, Can I tell Nero to use all 80 Minutes of Space on the CD-R eventhough the VCD is only 62 Minutes long, will using the extra 18 minutes of Space by reducing the Bitrate give me a Better Quality VCD?
-Thanks-

1 reducing bitrate is the opposite of what you want to do(increasing bitrate increases quality). 2 that i know you can't change the bitrate with nero. 3 changing the bitrate will make it a non compliant vcd (no longer a standard vcd) and therefore might make it incompatible with your player.

You won't get any good quality using Nero as your VCD Encoder! if you want good quality and higher quality, you better use TMPGEnc, you can even use the Wizard in TMPGEnc, and you can increase the Bitrate and see if it fits a 80min CDR properly (remember, upto 800mb)

The reason I used Nero 5.5 to Encode from .AVI to VCD is that TMPEnc would NOT Work, it keeps telling me that it's an invalid file or some such thing! I have had no luck at all with TMPEnc & am ready to junk it, Nero is the only thing I have gotten to work OK. I am open to the thought that Nero is not the best way to go for Encoding, the VCD looked like I was looking thru a Dirty glass pane, the previous already Encoded VCD's I have burned looked much better.
Is TMPEnc like real picky or am I just doing something wrong?

P.S. - What's the best way to get "Quality" VCD's? My DVD player will not play SVCD's so VCD is all I got. -
I have been told that if you run it back through TMPGEnc as a SVCD but put a VCD HEADER on it it play back through DVD that would not normally accept SVCD, the player think it's a VCD.. I have not tried this but plan to do it later today. This was posted somewhere on this forum, not sure where.

where did you get the avi file? that might give us an idea of why tmpenc is rejecting it...

I downloaded the .Avi file from Kazaa file sharing website, it's "Band Of Brothers" (Episode 3). I just don't understand why Nero ate it up just fine but TMPEnc just spit it out.
*That's interesting about your method for fooling the DVD Player into thinking an SVCD is a VCD. My DVD Player is a Mintek Model #DVD-2110 & at first I thought it was SVCD compliant but the Mintek Website says "You may find some funtionality with SVCD's but generally this machine is not compatible with the SVCD format". Just for the heck of it, I may try to Encode & Burn an SVCD & see if it works, might be a good experiment. So far I am disappointed with the VCD Quality, probably because I am trying to play them on my new 32" RCA TV (Really blurs out the picture).

you never know what exact codec some of those movies on kazaa are so that is prolly the reason for tmpgenc rejecting it... and you will never be impressed by vcd wuality if your source is a compressed avi of any form... you must start with uncompressed avi capture or a dvd rip in order to see vcd shine.

I would strongly suggest you try getting TMPGEnc 12a, i've not seen it fail in opening AVI files of all types, even those that the newer version reject.

Sefy:
How can I get TMPEnc Version 12a? The earliest version I could find on their Websiite was Version 12c (Is that good enough?)
-Mike- -
I'm afraid it's not as easy as it used to be, the author of TMPGEnc forbids the older version distribution (mostly because it could open ASF file which good ol' Microsoft forbids it!) so I think the only way you can find it is using google search engine.

I have the file in my archives, if the moderators don't object, i'll e-mail it to u if u give me ur e-mail in a PM
-
well if the admins do care ill post the site to get all versions of TMPGEnc public and pro
also i have been getting probs with the movies from kazaa it gives me pink blurs do you guys think if i get that ver of it will i get better encoding -
VCDhelp does not support warez, and before you say TMPGEnc is not warez, then you should read what the author wrote on the TMPGEnc webpage, it will not permit any website to distribute any of the older versions.
What you do in email and out of public view, is your business, but please not on the forums, thanks!Email me for faster replies!
