Hello, we finally purchased a DVDR and a Dimax Grex Advanced Image Stabilizer. The first two movies we've done have white flashes in no apparent pattern come over the movie. We aren't expecting DVD quality and these VHS tapes are not brand new but I just want to make sure we aren't doing something obviously wrongWe are not very tech savy but we follow directions pretty well!
Thank you for any help!

You may wish to upload a short sample of the final dvd as "White flashes" is rather ambigious.
It sounds like macrovision kicking in where the picture goes from light to dark.
I took a look at that unit. It claims to be a macrovision remover, an image stabilser, a TBC or rather it uses each of these descriptors for the SAME function. I could not see any user control on the unit so it appears that it is simply 'plug in and hope'
Are your VHSs macrovision protected ? There are various versions of this system and it is quite possible that this unit can not handle all of them. -
Yes the vhs tapes are protected. Well the ones we've done so far, we haven't started the home movies yet. I haven't had time to figure out how to upload a sample yet, I know that would be the mostly helpful! I did however, get a chance to look at Little Mermaid and it did not have the flashes of white! So Lion King and a couple others have but this one did not... sounds like what you were talking about! When it does flash, we can still see the picture and the audio doesn't skip a beat but obviously still annoying. It is indeed a plug and hope. I thought I also saw on the product description that it did dvd to dvd however it didn't work for us.

There are plenty of topics and guides here on how to rip a dvd, cut a portion out and create a clip. You just need a few free tools.
Interesting that the VHS you mention are Disney and you were probably drawn to this unit by the publicity blurb ".....you have a pile of Disney videos....." or words to that effect. Of course they would not tell you that it might work with some but not with others. Your home movies should be fine.
As for the Disney, I know it is a challenge to get these on DVD yourself but most are commercially available and you will NEVER achieve that quality. Oh, you may get close if you really invest in pro equipment - an $89 'plug and pray' does not fit that bill.
