Having bought DVD players in those days, yes I know you paid a lot of money for it and thus you want it to last until the end of time, but the reality is that your player is almost 10 years old. My Apex models from that era are sitting in boxes, barely working and being kept for "emergency only" use. Using the hack code should not have broken your player. I think it's likely just a coincidence, but the error you get likely indicates a laser problem and unless you can find instructions on the internet suggesting that you can replace the drive with some off the shelf one (this is rarely possible), it's time to get a new player.
You have to be VERY careful and do your research, but Philips was still making a few DVD players for sale in the USA/Canada that could be made region free like your old Cyberhome by entering a code. Do note that Philips BD players are completely different and you should not buy one of those if you want region free. You also should not ever do a firmware update on a Philips DVD player once you get it unlocked as firmware updates will very likely permanently break region free capability. Note that Philips must officially deny making such players so you'll have to do your research here and at other sites. Look up a likely player in a our list and see if we have recent reports about the hack codes still working or not. If you buy a player that can't be made region free you'll need to be able to take it back and get a different model. -
does any one have a suggestion as to what is a good region free player? thanks again.

Like Jman says, the laser is most likely dirty. If you're up to it, you can open it and clean the laser top lens with a cotton swab and some alcohol (not that 50% stuff); be gentle.
Does it play commercial DVD's? Does it play music CD's? If it won't play CD's, you won't be able to update it that way. You're left with flashing it with an EEPROM programmer.
You should not use a rewritable CD to update the firmware. If it plays CD's, but won't do the update, add at least 20 MB worth of .TXT files with the firmware update; try different brand blank CD-R. -
thanks for your time guys , going to give it a cleaning. if that fails, time for a new one. after 10 yrs it owes me nothing. any suggestions as to a decent zone free unit? thanks again, perfltd
