Ok - I have a 1080p encode, see details below.

    Type: Video
    Codec: H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (avc1)
    Resolution: 1920x1080
    Frame rate: 23.976023

    Type: Audio
    Codec: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)
    Language: English
    Channels: 3F2R/LFE
    Sample rate: 48000 Hz

When I open this up in Staxrip and prepare for re-encoding (lets say to another .mp4 or even .mkv) when I configure the audio to read:

    Codec: AAC
    Mode: VBR
    Profile: Automatic
    Channels: 6 (5.1)
    Sample Rate: Original (or 48000Hz)
    Bitrate: 256kbps
    Quality: 0.40

The resulting encode has perfect picture but absolutely no sound? i.e. Opened it with VLC, checked codec info, Video info is as above, but Audio isn't even listed?

    Any ideas?

Also - if I can tag on one other question? Anyone know of a quality program to edit .mp4 video? I have two separate files that I need to trim a few minutes off each and then join them to make one complete (edited) file. I have tried VideoReDo, Yamb, avidemux, Solveig, and all the usuals - but none of them work properly. (i.e. they are either not frame accurate (or even close to accurate) or in the case of VideoReDo - it somehow changes the framerate from 23.976023 to 23.980815 ???

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Baldrick,

Thanks for your reply and for sorting out my thread. Sorry about the cross posting - I realised that I posted in the wrong section, but couldn't find a way to delete the thread.

Anyway, I'm not 100% sure what you mean: "Are you copying the audio in staxript?" I am opening the complete file (video & audio) in Staxrip, it is scanning the contents of the file like it normally does and then I get to the usual page where I can edit (crop, resize, file size, etc.) I set everything up like I normally do, select my container (.mp4 or .mkv) and set up the audio.

I've done this a million times with loads of file - all without issue. It's just as soon as I try to obtain 5.1 AAC (from a file with 5.1 AAC to begin with) I end up with no audio at all????

If you can shed any light on this - I would be very grateful for your help. Alternatively, do you know of a program which can edit (frame accuracy) a .mkv file? I've tried the one's about without any luck.

    Thanks in advance.

    Baldrick,

P.S. I can select AC3 (5.1) instead of AAC (5.1) and I get perfect sound - it just progressively goes more and more out of sync the longer the movie goes on - i.e. it's not always just -200ms out of sync - it keeps changing. Hence why I'm wondering why I can't get AAC 5.1 - if the original file had AAC 5.1 ???

    Thanks.
