    Im about to buy a blu ray writer and am looking for something similar to convert x to dvd which has served me well over the last few years.

    Is there something that will do the same job for blu ray discs? Looking to put several backup movies onto blu ray ie die hard series etc.

    You could try free tools like AVCHDCOder, BDTOAVCHD, MultiAVCHD.

    Or dvdfab blu-ray creator.
