Are Plextor DVD burners any good. They've gotten cheaper which suggests lower quality. Who make their drives?

Plextors are rebadged Lite-on drives these days, though one of their blu ray drives was a Pioneer 205. It is now out of production. Plextor uses proprietary firmware, though it doesn't seem to help in any way, and they tend to lag behind in firmware updates compared to Lite-on.

My usual advice for potential Plextor buyers is that if you are going to buy a Lite-on, you might as well pay Lite-on prices. The Plextors are virtually always more expensive.

    WOW!!!
That is a name i have not heard or seen in a long time!!
    Like YEARS!!!!!!!

And as for "getting cheaper", i just did a search on Newegg and they seem to be WAY more expensive than actual Liteon drives, LG, Samsung, etc.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=-1&IsNodeId=1&Description=...CE&PageSize=20

I have a few LG dvd burners & a Samsung burner & they work great for a lot less than what the Plextor's seem to be going for!!
    http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=5&name=CD-DVD-Burners

    $32.99 + $4.99 Shipping for a Plextor Vs. $16.99 W/Free shipping for an LG.....
    Buh Bye Plextor!!!

Now i know why I have not seen, heard or thought of the name Plextor in years and years!!!
    LOL!!!

Plextor used to make one of the best cd/dvd burners. They now use as mentioned rebadged Liteon drives. Paying for just the name is lame when there are better dvd drives out there. Pioneer makes crappy dvd burners now....dunno wth they were thinking when they decided to stop using NEC chipsets....Just my two cents!

Yeah, keyword.... "used" to make one of the best cd/dvd burners.......
    LOL!!!

I am a pioneer snob for home audio equipment, and they were pioneers (no pun intended) in the first dvd burners for home PC's and later on, but i don't see myself buying another Pioneer pc dvd burner anytime soon.....
The one i have has been goofy at best, even though it always burned perfectly with no coasters, it alway's acted funny.....

Even their latest BD burners are Liteon rebadges, prior they have used Pioneer drives (DVD & BD).

Plextor still means kinda quality, like with Buffalo, which rebadge Pioneer drives since a while.

  7. I just bought a Memorex BluRay external writer from Staples for $75 & it's a Pioneer inside, so you never know what you're going to get.
