I thought this would be easy... but for Windows I don't see anything available. V-Dub doesn't appear to support .mov, and Debut is trialware.
Isn't there any free util for capturing QT on a Windows PC?

Have you tried QT alt.? You can find it in the programs.Good luck
People who love sausage and respect the law should never watch either of them being made. -
Why don't you capture with vdub and convert? Would give you much more flexibility.
Have a good one,

Somebody has to ask this.
Why would you want or need to capture in .Mov format? Why not capture in a less compressed format and convert to .Mov, if that's the end format you really want? Quicktime is proprietary and you may not find many programs that will let you capture in that format. Real and WMV are similar in that most programs and code are written by the originator of the format and not commonly released to other vendors to write programs for their use.

Hi Red,
Fair Question.
Our department has a monthly meeting that I record. The person who gets the recordings is a Mac-centric person and highly prefers QT. They get the file before leaving the facility, so no time for me to transcode. And he doesn't wish to do this.
We are just trying to accommodate his needs.
Oly: Will try VLC
Tnx,

OK, in the event anyone else should need to capture QT from Windows... VLC does indeed work.
Quirky as hell. The newest version has a broken encoder, so you need to use V1.0.0.
The default Hue adjustment is way off so you have to set manually.
I don't see a way of saving a session configuration, so you have to configure each time you launch.
But, it does work, and it is free - so I'm not complaining.

Good that you found a solution.
Maybe another member can come up with a easier method.

Hello. Likewise I'd like to record MOV from QT Pro, something that is possible on my Mac but not on the PC. Why?:
The reason being that my customer wants MOV files as he's on Mac. Otherwise recording in DV-AVI with Pinnacle Studio or VLC and then converting but this takes time and diskpace.
Disappointed that QT7Pro on the PC is different from the Mac especially as I paid for it. Is there really no way?
I found that capture with vdub creates huge files with the default codecs. Perhaps there is a codec that encodes to a reasonable file size or even QT on vdub.

That's not so much the fault of the app is it is with the underlying foundation...
On a Mac, the QT api is BUILT-IN to the underlying OS. So any apps that use QT on a Mac are running their multimedia "natively", and any that use another format (AVI, Real, WMV, MPG/MP4, MKV) must either get a shim/plugin to hook into that api (Flip4Mac plugin, e.g.), or they must resort to using their own internal/independent multimedia framework (VLC does this).
The converse happens on a Windows PC.
It uses Directshow (and also, formerly/supplementally VFW). Apps that use Dshow on a PC run natively and apps that don't use Dshow (QT/MOV is a great example) must either have one of those shim/plugins or must run independently with their own internal framework (QT Player and VLC both do this, in different ways).
Because the "capture/record straight to MOV" is part of the FOUNDATION (which isn't inherent on a PC, but IS on a Mac), that's why it's available on a Mac and not on a PC, even with the same app. Plus, Apple has continued to lag in it's support for it's Windows version compared to it's Mac version.

Thanks for that comment Cornucopia, that explains things well.
Another thing I don't understand is why native on Lion (Mac) you get QT 10 whereas QT Pro requires QT 7. Why isn't there a QT10 Pro.
On the PC though I would still like to record in MOV because I haven't connected my analogue source to the Mac and it would cost me more ... -
QT X (10) is built differently and is not unlike the change made between the old FCP and FC-X. It's "streamlined" and in a very few ways optimized/enhanced (particularly for "sharing"), but it's also dumbed-down (missing previous features).
There is no such thing as a Pro 10, because that's not what it was meant to do. The good thing is that you can install QT 7 along side of it (and subsequently use QT7 Pro if you so desire), without it interfering with the install of QT10.
Maybe this (VDIG java code plugin for QT) can help you with QT capture on a PC (YMMV, I haven't tried this myself)...

Unfortunatel the suggested WinVDig http://rsbweb.nih.gov/ij/plugins/qt-capture.html crashes my XP on install and then fails to run correctly on reboot asking me if I installed as admin (which I am) and not being able to find WinVDig video renderer.
