Would there be any real reason to install Adobe Premiere 5.1 if you already have Vegas Pro 8? Anything it does that VP8 doesn't or anything it does better than VP8?

  2. Biggest reason would be Mercury Playback Engine - If you have a compatible CUDA GFX card, some effects , filters and manipulations like scaling are GPU accelerated. Rendering can be a lot faster, sometimes 1-20x faster depending on the project . But you should go to CS5.5 update if you were updating, not 5.1 (some important fixes)

A negative is that it is waaay more bloated compared to Vegas Pro 8. Even newer Vegas versions are way more bloated. They require signifcantly more CPU, RAM, HDD space just to run the damn thing

So if Vegas Pro 8 does everything that you need to , don't install Premiere

Vegas Pro 8 is getting a bit long in the tooth (old) as the current version is 11. Recent versions deal with AVCHD format better if that is a consideration.

The other advantage for Premiere is tighter integration with AE, Photoshop and other Adobe apps if that is a consideration.

Learning Premiere from scratch is a significant adjustment.

Are you talking about Adobe Premiere 5.1 or Adobe Premiere Pro CS5? These versions are at least 10 years apart.
For the nth time, with the possible exception of certain Intel processors, I don't have/ever owned anything whose name starts with "i".

Yes Premiere 5.1. It's an old version.

Premiere 5.x was the first to support DV format. They didn't get the bugs out until v6.5.

Premiere 6.5 was the first to include the Mainconcept Mpeg2 encoder.
