Hello! I think this is the right thread for this, but I appologize if it isn't. I have a few questions regarding Sony Vegas Pro 11 Student Edition. First off, is this the same program as Sony Vegas Pro 11, just with pricing for a student? Because I am 17, and would like to use the best version possible. My trial ran out, and I'd rather just buy it than re-installing my OS (Windows 7).

Second, is Adobe After Effects compatible with Vegas? Because I would like to use After Effect for some of my video effects.

Also, I realize this is very vague, but could I get a brief rundown on a comparison/ pros and cons of Adobe Premier, Sony Vegas, and Avid? What do you use, and why?

    Thanks!
    - Ian

All do similar. Vegas is a more complete package (includes DVD Author for DVD/Blu-Ray authoring). If you are a serious student sample them all.

Is your intention to be a professional editor or what? What kind of student are you?

I'm just a highschool student. I have a YouTube channel called MoreThanLuck that I maintain. I want to start doing shirts similar to Youtube Freddiew. Will Vegas work with after effects? And what about my other questions?

It's "compatible" in the sense that you can import/export lossless intermediates between the two, use a frameserver (e.g. debugmode frameserver), use scripts, or AAF

    e.g.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JkO-y_KfcuY

If you buy an Adobe suite like the Production Premium bundle , programs like AE , Premiere, photoshop, Illustrator, Encore - etc.. you can use dynamic link and everything works as if it was 1 program, changes in linked programs are reflected in the other program so the workflow is less "clunky", and faster

I fairly certain Vegas Student edition is the same , but I'm 100% sure Adobe eductional products are identical in function to retail version

IMO, it doesn't make sense to buy Vegas + AE separately. Adobe gives large discounts students (~80% off). AE alone is ~$1000. Photoshop, Premiere, Audition, Flash, Illustrator are about $500 - $800 for each title. The Production bundle includes all those, as well as a few other software like Adobe Media Encoder, Bridge, a few more. Student pricing for the Production bundle is about $400-450. You get all those for about the same pricing as Vegas' Student edition (I looked around Vegas Pro 11 Academic was about $350-450)

Comparison: I don't use Avid , but I use both Vegas and Premiere. Vegas is easier to use if you are new to editing. It's more intuitively setup IMO. Both are very capable NLE's, but with slightly different type of editing styles. Some people "hate" the way editing is done in Vegas, and vice-versa for Premiere . Once you get used to the workflow and keyboard shortcuts, you can be very quick & efficient with either.

Vegas uses real terminology like "Playback Rate". Premiere uses madeup terms like "Time Warp".

So a lot of the concepts in Vegas are easier to learn. Example: You already know what "playback rate" means, so if you wanted to do a "time warp" or anything else to do with time, you know exactly what to look for, and there it is!

The mindset of Adobe and Sony (parent company) is that THEY are the experts, and YOU are just a moneypayer, and that you don't know much and need their help. Again, Vegas is the exception.

That's part of the beauty of Vegas. It empowers YOU, not to draw attention to its "exotic" features, with a snazzy name, that in reality is just a simple adjustment on a simple tool.

One of the problems dealing with Apple users is that a "Server" is called "Grand Central Station" or something kooky like that, and it creates a communication gap. Adobe does that too to lock in users.

Imagine if cameras did that, all hell would break loose, and that's what Sony is doing. They're creating apples from oranges and renaming to "Quantized Ratio Targeted Output", and then quoting it as the only camera that has "QRTO".

Then you find out later that it's nothing more than a marketing term. Has no effect in real terms. Just a bling-bling led lights up to give the appearance that something good is happening.

Adobe and Sony are notorious for this kind of stuff, Vegas excluded. Vegas is made by a separate American entity that plays square.

    VEGAS Baby!

Once again the Mac hater is talking out of his ass. He is absolutely clueless regarding Macs and Mac software.

An example from the Compressor 4 manual (part of FCP X).

I read that somewhere in an Apple spec sheet when we had that hot debate over how to network with FCP. Are you saying that term doesn't exist?

Just say the word that it doesn't exist, and I'll find it and post it here.

    Go Ahead!

What you are refering to is mentioned here for FCP X (last item, left column of app. features).

Except for the fact that each machine handles it's own core scheduleing with its own OS, as GCD is an OS function. The software that handles the distribution of jobs between machines in the cluster is called Qmaster, which is part of the compressor app.

And, yes I have been naughty. So much so, that my wife is demanding I come upstairs for my punishment. Oh-No! Not the handcuffs and choclate syrup again.

Cut the crap (or at least the confusion). Adobe is owned by Adobe Systems. Sony purchased Vegas from Sonic Foundry years ago and has controlled its development ever since.

Sony Creative Software operates autonomously from the parent Sony.

Hahha that some neat stuff and creative ideas. I love the "My Little Pony" section . Hilarious!

Maybe I'm missing something, but what does "shirts" have to do with this ?

Maybe you can ask specific questions about the software - what kind of criteria are you looking at? Pros/Cons is pretty vague

A subsidiary is about as autonomous from the parent company as a branch is from a tree.

Yep, that's him. Sorry - I meant "shorts". Like I want to make short videos similar to what he puts up in terms of quality and effects-wise.

I just realized I have Adobe Premiere 8 pre-installed on my computer. Just took a look at it for about 2 hours. Not a big fan right off the bat. But I do want to use After Effects for VFX if possible. I just like the way it works, and I'm used to it's features and ways.

What about torrenting, with intent to buy when I have money? Don't I have to worry about online registration to get caught? What about with keygening also? Would I have to use them offline only if I did?

My birthday is soon (this friday), and my parents offered to go 50/50 on editing software. I'll download the trial for Premiere Elements 10, and CS5.5 and see if I like them better. I have to make a decision soon, and want to get the best bang for my buck.

Also, Freddie has said that he edits in FCP, and then does VFX with After Effects. Would his process be similar to what I'd have to do with Vegas and After Effects? I've heard that Premiere and FCP are very similar products, but since FCP is not made by Adobe would importing and effects with FCP / After Effects be similar to Vegas / After Effects.

Thanks again everyone, you've all been very helpful.

    @MoreThanLuck,
The process of going between FCP<-->AE is basically the same as between Vegas<-->AE. For basic-to-intermediate editing work, ALL the pro NLEs are pretty much the same (I feel from experience with all of them). They only differ on their extended/expert focus features (and obviously in their nomenclature & choice of shortcuts).

Not a good idea to go down the warez/torrent route, even if it seems straightforward and (on the surface) relatively benign. There are many ways it'll bite you in the ass: Viruses, Legal repercussions, bugs in the hacking that can corrupt projects, and the clear lack of manufacturer support.

@Cornucopia Well, then I guess that's almost everything.

Is there anything Premiere has that Vegas doesn't that I would need going forward?

And on the topic of torrents, eliminating all the other variables of bad torrents and viruses, would I be at risk of using the program while connected to the Internet, after keygening it?

    1. We don't talk about WAREZ on this forum!!

    2. Sure there's stuff in Premiere not in Vegas. There's stuff in Vegas not in Premiere. Neither is basic stuff. WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Hey man, a lot of people here have spent a lot of years and money to get the knowledge needed, they've paid their dues.

Revealing yourself as a warez user just turned off those people, and lowered your status here to the bottom. Next time you go into a forum, don't do it, because it's not cool.

Adios from me to this thread.

I don't advise using torrents. I really appologize for alienating some of you. I'm just a highschooler, with a strong desire to learn as much of this as I can and be as capable with these programs, but with a super low income, which makes obtaining the programs very difficult. I was given a unique opertunity to get a program. I never meant to steal programs just because you can, or because I don't want to buy it.

I guess my only remaining question is, Is there anything included in Premiere that there isn't in Vegas that you would consider. very useful? Something that makes getting one or the other essential?
