Ok I am sure that somewhere in here it has been covered but I have been searching and can't find it. I am just wanting to convert all my dvds (discs) to .avi files to put on my hard drive and play on my tv. I am wanting to be able to get the quality that you see when you download some of these movies off the bittorrent websites. Again I am sorry if it has already been covered. Thanks for the help ahead of time.

There are lots of tools for this. AutoGK is pretty easy to use.

Thanks...now on all these programs do they all take in if upwards of 1+hours? And then if anyone does this conversion on a regular basis is there on that you prefer over another?

That depends entirely on the speed of your computer. They might. With a decent computer and you doing single pass quality based encodes (Target Quality in percentage, if using AutoGK), it might take less than an hour.

If you do it regularly and want the best possible results, you'll probably do it manually and not rely on an all-in-one program. But, as all-in-one programs go, AutoGK is very good.

Well my computer is a toshiba protege laptop, i3 processor, 4gig ram, 500gig hd, win 7.
If i did it manually..?? how would i go about doing that. Sorry for all the questions I have been wanting to put all my movies on my hard drive for a while and havent figured out the best way to do it and not loose quality but save space at the same time.

  6. Just do it and find out. Since you won't be making them for a specific size, like for a CD or two, just install DVDFab HD Decrypter (to decrypt the movie to your hard drive) and AutoGK, Load the IFO for the movie you want, set AutoGK for Target Quality at the default 75%, and let 'er rip. There's an included tutorial that comes with it. It's also available online in a number of languages. Here's the English one:

    http://www.autogk.me.uk/modules.php?name=TutorialEN

    Here are more guides:

    https://www.videohelp.com/guides?searchtext=&tools=452&madeby=&formatconversionselect=&...or+List+Guides

If the final size is too large for your tastes, either lower the width (by default it'll give you a 720 width, so try maybe 640), or the percentage (down to 65% maybe).

And at your stage you shouldn't be thinking about doing it manually (an AviSynth script frameserved into VDub). Walk before you run. And many here might suggest not making XviD or DivX AVIs but x264 encodes, which will require the use of a different program.

Allright sounds good...I do appreciate the help...you said walk before you run, I have my bach in computer science and worked in the navy as a electronic tech as the lan and computer admin so i am no stranger to computer just a little new to this side of the house. i am not saying this to be mean or rude but just to let you know that i have a little knowledge in the field.

All my dvds are burned so i wont need to decrypt to start.
