  1. I want to convert HD videos with as little loss of quality as possible and naturally I chose the Lossless preset, and from FFV1, LJPEG, RAWVIDEO etc (most i do not understand), I chose the H264 preset, and volia! there are even MORE options to choose from.

    ABR 3000kbps HQ
    2P-VBR 9800kbps HQ
    ABR 9800kbps HQ
    CRF 21.00 BS
    CRF 21.00 GQ
    CRF 21.00 HQ
    CRF 22.00 HQ
    CRF Lossless GQ
    Q Lossless GQ
    Q 21.00 BS
    Q 21.00 GQ
    Q 21.00 HQ
    Q 22.00 HQ

I simply have no earthly clue what any of them mean. The Default for H264 is CRF 21.00 HQ so maybe i should stick with that, but then again, the Default for Lossless is FFV1 and that means a whooping 2.2gb for 5 mins of video. I have a 2.5 gb mkv file and i hope the size of the converted video would be no more than 1.5 gb, so what is the best option here? What's the difference between CRF 21.00 GQ, CRF 21.00 HQ, CRF 22.00 HQ anyway?

  2. Did you find any explanation? if so please share.

The author should provide some documentation. It's extremely difficult for newcomers to understand what all this terminology stands for.

  3. Here is a rough summary about what I found out so far (anyone please feel free to add or correct)

CFR = Constant Frame Rate, a higher CFR means smaller files and less quality, so 20 is better than 21
2P = Two pass, stands for 2-pass encoding. I assume all settings without 2P are one pass encoding
BS = Best speed, speed optimized encoding, lower quality
HQ = High quality, slower than BS, but better quality
SHQ = Super high quality, slower then HQ, but better quality
