  1. On advice here I switched form DivX player to VLC and until now had been great.
Usually new video files come in at AVCHD format and play OK
However just recorded a bundle of these at 1080p .... and VLC seems unable to play them properly.
Audio is OK .,.. but video jumping all over the place.

Read that it could be incorrect use of cores .... core 1 running at 70% core 2 at 45% (twin processor 2.4GHz)

The Media info file is attached is detail is needed

If I drop files into Sony Vegas they play OK ... I Googled around and found some advice to change these settings:
    http://kramfs.com/choppy-video-when-viewing-1080p-using-vlc/

and Selected “All” under "skip the loop filter for H.264 decoding"

    However it made no difference.

Should I be getting the Graphics card to do more - I have an Nvideo Geforce 7900 GS
anything else I can tweak ?

You switch to MPCHC, Splash or PotPlayer.

Or do you just want to use ONE player?

  3. I had hoped moving to VLC would allow a on player solution.
If it won't, then which should I go get?

Give mpc-hc a try. You may be able to get DXVA acceleration working.

  5. OK ... downloaded MPCH .. all settings as defualt.

    and it's different result.
Video now plays fine, but audio is choppy .... i.e. keeps dropping out to no audio ... clear when it does play it.

Processor working at about same level.

When the video is playing, right click and select "filters". Is the MPC video decoder being used?
    Is DXVA active at all?

On the right window you see MPC video decoder.
You have to click on that, another window opens up.

What does it say for "DXVA mode" ?

Yes - notice it says "not using DXVA" ? This means it is not using any video acceleration.
Although it could be the file. You should open the media file with mediainfo and put it into view/text mode and place the info here.

Secondly your 7900GS only has limited support for HW acceleration. See this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PureVideo#Table_of_PureVideo_.28HD.29_GPUs

On the otherhand, this article says that DXVA may work, but it only mentions 720p.
    http://www.elecard.com/en/technology/dxva/dxva-avc.html

Have you tried any other H.264 files?

  11. Media info for video is attached.

I had already contacted NVIDIA as I read on the VLC site that it needs VP2 support. The website sya 7900GS does not support this ... but NVIDIA disagree ... here is their statement to me:

"the graphic card 7900 gs is compatible with the "PureVideo in its 2nd generation " actually all the cards above the 6 series are compatible with the "PureVideo in its 2nd generation"

I understand the frustration - I spent a lot of time on my 8600 GT trying to uncover similar information.
Try this file, and see if it plays in DXVA mode in mpc-hc (check view/options/internal filters - make sure
H264/AVC dxva is checked (on the right) ).

If still not working, perhaps look for an updated Nvidia driver, also, Microsoft June 2010 Directx redist update.

    Was dxva active ?
If you can spin off some of your problem file, I'll try it on mine -
see if I can figure out what's going on.

If it's more that 30MB, put it up at mediafire.com and put the url in here.

    Try the directx update.

Here's the 1080p versionj. Does this play in DXVA mode?

  15. It says 'Not using DXVA'

Don't know how to split off part of file without changing format ... I can't use Virtual Dub as it does not accept format ... is there a way to split file easily ?

If it's under 100MB post the whole thing.
Otherwise, perhaps AVIdemux can split it.

ON my PC, it played in DXVA mode but it stuttered. (played OK for a second, stopped, etc, etc)
It's probably because of the 50 fps.

If you have a decent CPU in your box, try a directshow player (WMP for example) and
    enable a multi-thread decoder such as ffdshow/ffmpeg-mt.

On my box, the CPU almost maxed out at (96% usage in Task Manager) but it played OK.

  19. I installed the K-Lite codec pack ....
It came up with dozens of screens ... just left all as standard (simple install) .... and files play OK on MPCH ......
However WMP does not recognise file type ... guess I should config something but don't know what.

Having MPCH working is fine ..... however processor core1 running 85 and core 2 up to 100%

Will this change of codec pack now cause me issue for non 1080p files ?

It shouldn't cause an issue. Despite the fact it's untrusted by most of the community here, I think it uninstalls cleanly
if you want to get rid of it. Usually recommended is Haali media splitter and FFDShow.

To play the files in WMP you may need haali. To test any files usage of the directshow chain, (splitter, codec, etc, etc)
Download Graphstudio from here and use it to render the file. It will show you what filters are being used.

I'm not surprised it uses much of you CPU. Mine is a quite modest dual core AMD x2, and playing back that file
is about the limit for my PC.

  21. It removed Haali media splitter as part of install, and installed a new ver of FFDShow.

NOt sure if it is time I looked to give my PC some more hp
