  1. Bare with me please, here is my dilema and dont know what to do.

I have video site, all videos i shoot with a simple camcorder, and simply encode with handbrake, I then host them on amazon s3

My problems arise when I wanted to do some simple titles, transitions. What do I do?

Do I import the raw video from my sd card into a video editor, do what I want then encode them in handbrake? Its seems a very time consuming process but I know next to nothing about video.

I encode to .mp4 and the majority of videos are 30-50 mb in size and I have about 300 of them.

My laptop has a hard time trying to edit a file that is 1gb in size before encoding.

Where do i start im totally lost after playing with many editors, I do not need real fancy videos as the content is whats important, but titles would be nice.

  2. Hmm...You "have a video site" and "don't know what to do". I did it the other way around. First I learned how to edit videos then I created a video site. Maybe you should do the same? You have not given us enough info.

    What camcorder?
    What editor do you use?
There is free software to do titles and transitions. But I was never quite happy with the process so I went out and bought Sony Vegas Studio HD Platinum 11. I have never been happier. But you will need a decent computer to edit HD video.

You should edit and add transitions before encoding with handbrake.

A little information about the camera would be helpful. Some inexpensive editors only work with a few codecs, so ideally, you should use one that can import the kind of files the camera produces. An editor that does smart encoding (only re-encodes where it is needed, not everything) when exporting the edited file is also a good idea.

  4. Samsung handheld 1920x1080, 300 dollar camera, works and looks great. I have been playing with avs editor 6.1, while it works great for the simple stuff I want, it takes days on end when I am done with my titles and want to save the video. Then I have to go encode in handbrake? How do I speed this process up? Is it a function of my slower laptop? One would think in 2011 someone would make a stupid simple program, not everyone needs all these bells and whistles.

If its too complicated or time consuming I will do away with it and simply encode in handbrake and be done, but I thought titles and a simple title to video transition would be a nice touch, but its nothing short of very time consuming

if you're using avs video editor there is no reason to then re-encode your files using hand brake. both avs and hand brake use x264 for h264 encoding, so not only are you doing the encoding twice you're also reducing the quality of the final product by encoding more times than you need to.

with regards to the slow speed, if you're using an older laptop what do you expect? if you're serious about running a site that features content you shoot and edit you should really consider investing a few bucks on a decent desktop to act like your workstation. you don't have to go crazy but even with a relatively mid range cpu like a core i5 2500k you can cut those days down to hours.

  6. Ok now can you help with the settings in avs, all I know is what I was told to use in handbrake. I am using easy video player and they have a video on what settings to use in handbrake which made getting encoded .mp4 videos nice and simple. Thanks a bunch

Oh ya laptop is 3 yrs old and has 4gb of ram. I have no issues getting a desktop to do the job. I just want to know the slow speed is directly related to the pc being used before I buy a new desktop for no reason.

i just downloaded the latest avs video editor demo and checked, the settings you use in hand brake should map pretty closely to the settings in avs; after you import your source and edit it as desired, choose "produce"->"file" and then you have to choose a container type, only 4 are offered, only avi and mov support avc as a video codec (i'm guessing you're using mp4 as your container if you're using handbrake, you can always remux later), choose "avc"->"advanced" and you will settings that should be familiar to you.

after that you will be left with an avi that contains avc video with any number of audio types (i'm guessing you will choose mp3).

if you are intent on using aac audio and mp4 container, you can then just open the file in any number of free apps, like avidemux or media coder and just set the output container as mp4, set the video to "copy" and set the audio to encode as aac, but that's only if you're not happy with the avi.

yeah, the slow speed is definitely due to the older hardware.

he's doing that with avs video editor, but he's adding an additional step of exporting his edited file from avs in God knows what format and then encoding using hand brake and he's wasting days doing this; avs supports encoding using x264 (just as hand brake), it's simpler to do everything in one app.

and for the record, despite any performance issues that may be associated with avs, in many ways it is the best editor for amateurs, it's chimp like easy to do many of the things that require you to jump through hoops to do with the more pro centric editors.

  12. MP4 container
    720x480
    Modulus 16
    Codec H.264 (x264)
    2 pass encoding
    Avg Bitrate 800kbps
    Framerate same as source
    Reference Frames 4

Those are the settings I was told to use, I saved them as a profile and I simply click source, designate file name and folder and click the go button. Nice and simple for me. So if one can be so kind, translate my handbrake settings to avs and if all is well, I am going to buy avs as it does exactly all I need and I will go buy a faster desktop tonight. Thanks again

mp4 container - as i said, avs video editor does not support output to this container format, it does support output to avi and mov, i would choose mov as it seems to be an industry standard and in all honesty it would save you the trouble of having to remux from the avi container to an mp4 container; of course you could also just stick with avi.

720x480/modulus 16 - the term "modulus" as it's used here means to divide one number by another with no remainder left over, i.e. to divide evenly. the 16 signifies to use a resolution where both the vertical and horizontal values are evenly divisible by 16. 720/16 = 45 and 480/16 = 30 but your source is 1920x1080 which has an aspect ratio of 16/9 or 1.78 but 720x480 has an aspect ratio of 1.5. you should choose a resolution that has an aspect ratio that is the same as your source or 1.78.

thus, i would choose 960x544 as it's both mod 16 complaint and has an aspect ratio almost 1.78, but i would also up the bit rate (800 kbps is really low).

frame rate you can set manually to whatever your camera records in (i'm guessing 25 fps).

reference frames 4 - this you can set as follows: next to where you choose avc as your video codec you click on advanced, then go to "more" and you can set the max # of reference frames.

while i was at it, from maximum quality under "method" i would choose "exhaustive search", range i would set to 64, for threads i would choose 2x the number of cores (this is a performance tweak), in the "MB and Frames" tab under "Partitions" i would choose all the options and under B frames i would choose Bi-Directional ME. your laptop will choke on these settings but if you get a reasonably fast sandy bridge based system with a quad core and a decent amount of ram it should be reasonably fast at the resolution and low bit rates you'll be using.

that is very nice of you but i would feel awkward accepting anything from someone i helped when the whole purpose of this site to to learn and help each other out and others have helped me with no expectation of compensation.

now if you want to do something nice for me you can; every year around this time i go out and find homeless people living under bridges and overpasses, people that aren't substance abusers but may have a physical disability or be down on their luck and i hand them some cash, as much as i can spare, it's not much but i'm not a rich man and have been out of work for a while but i try to help out those that have less than me in remembrance of the true meaning of christmas and what the person (who we can't mention in this forum due to the ban on religious discussions) who inspires the holiday once said:

"That which you do for the lowest of my brethren you do for me".

if you happen to run across someone that fits the above description, give him whatever you would have given me and tell him merry christmas from chris.
