    Hi,

I capture video with a component cable and a capture card in 720p. Is it a good idea to use a 10m (30ft) from my set-top box to my pc? Now I use a 3m cable and there aren't any visible artifacts. The reasen I want to use a longer cable is I always have to change the place of the set-top box when I want to capture video due to the short length of the cable. So, my question is, will I have loss of quality (I know I always have loss of quality, but I mean 'visible') using a 10m (Profigold?) component cable?

    Thanks in advance

Good quality component cables up to 50' here, no problems ... cheap cables always cause issues

Profigold is usually quality merchandise, so no problem. They make different cable types, but at 50' you'll get a cleaner image with solid-core wire than with stranded core. Most people see no difference between the two.

Ever thought of making it yourself? I have made several good quality cables cheaply. For component, take 3 same length of good quality 75 Ohm double shielded, solid core coax videocable and terminate with 75 Ohm HF shielded connectors and you're set.

Most pros do make their own cables. But it depends on what you mean by "quality" cable. The goods you buy in big box stores like Best Buy or sources like Radio Shack, hardware stores, etc., are unknown entities that rarely turn out to be "quality" stuff. A pro would get something like a 400-foot spool of Belden 1695, plus Centrex or Canare connectors and the crimping tools to make the connections. Home-made connectors are usually cheap tin stuff with poor soldered connections (pros don't use solder, they use crimping tools with solderless plugs made for this purpose). Factory-made heat-molded or crimped connections will outperform awful stuff like Monster Cable soldered joints any time. Pro crimping tools themselves will cost $200 USD or more. The OP mentioned Profigold wire. Everything I've seen and heard about them indicates it is a generally good line of products (I tried their HDMI, which made the HDMI sold in the U.S. look pretty anemic).
