I'm new to Corel Video Studio Pro x4...have not bought it yet, using the demo download. I'm transferring old home movies to DVD by capturing projector output with a dig. camcorder going directly into a dvd recorder via s video cable.
My resulting dvds have vob files. It appears VS 4 does not import vobs so I convert them with Any Video Converter to .mpg mpeg-II movies and import into VS 4. When I produce a dvd, the film has a lot of zigzags, especially on high contrast edges with quick movement. I also used the same vobs, imported directly into AVS Video Editor and did not have the interlacing problem at all.
I like the Corel program better and wish to buy it IF I can solve this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated...Should I convert to something other than .mpg? I'm hoping to retain as much of the original quality as possible...file size is of no importance.

I do not have V4 but the earlier versions certainly imported VOBs - check to see if 'Import DVD' is an option.
But I am a little worried about your workflow. Likely that Any Video Converter has corrupted the source. If V4 can not import the original DVD then I would suggest you try Vob2Mpeg - that program will create, like it says on the tin, an mpeg from your DVD(Vobs) and load that into V4.
Also be very careful with field-order. Analogue video is top-field first - Corel calls this 'Field B'. The program should tell you the correct field-order. Your DVD must be authored with the correct field-order. -

Try changing the file extension from .VOB to .MPG. A DVD VOB file is MPEG2 video wraped in a VOB container.

That would only work properly for a dvd with one audio track - so should be fine for your purpose(see below).
Not a perfect solution as a dvd is made up of several VOBs so you would have to merge these together in your editor - VOB2Mpeg creates one mpeg only.
But, again, there should be no need to rename. My earlier version of this program could import single VOBs - it would complain that the file was not editable but would then proceed to index it and make it so. -
No, not the best solution but certainly the quickiest and easiest to test out VSPX4. No merging of multiple VOB's is necessary. Just insert all renamed files at once into the timeline. This works fine in VSPX3, which does not seem to have a clue regarding VOB files. If the renamed VOB has more than one audio track, only the first one is available.
But after re-reading jonalb's post, I think all of this is unnecessary if he can modify his workflow.
Jonalb, you don't mention what type of camcorder you are using, but if your camera is a standard DV camcorder with cassette tape and a firewire port. Capture your video to tape. Then import the DV video straight into VVSPX4 through the cameras firewire port. If your PC does not have a firewire card, you can get a card and cable from Monoprice.com for less than $15.
In your stated workflow, it looks like you have at least three re-encodes. That is really killing the quaity of your video. Once you have the DV video into VS4, you can do your edits, then directly convert it to a DVD or other type of video file.
