  1. I have been looking for a BluRay drive for my PC but they are still a bit too expensive for me. I got the idea of buying a BluRay player (I can get a used one for about $25) and taking out the drive from the player, and hooking it up to my PC via a SATA/IDE interface. Is this possible? I've never opened a standalone BD player before. Do the standalones just basically use OEM BD drives, like the ones they sell for PC's?

not usually, the drive most likely is completely bare with no metal box around it. no way to mount it in a pc.

Thanks for the reply, but I don't need to mount it. I have an external USB converter, which can hook up to any SATA or IDE hard disk drive or regular DVD-ROM player.

I just want to know if the drive inside stand-alone BluRay players are the same ones they sell for PC's, or are at least compatible to be used in a PC?

Umm...."no metal box around it" means no connections(like SATA) that computers have. Just wires from the drive to a circuit board.

Probably it will have an IDE or SATA plug. I opened up an old DVD recorder and found that did anyway.
I could put the drive into a PC but the problem is that I couldn't get proper drivers for it. It was recognised as a DVD burner but there was no way to even eject the tray by software or hardware. (No physical eject button either.) So I just junked it.

But you might be lucky and find it compatible with a standard drive.

  6. Well I suppose for $25 I might just take the chance. In the worse case, I could just use it as a stand-alone BluRay player. Thanks for the advice.

BD read/DVD burners are $59.99 at the egg, with one BD burner for $10 more with rebate.
