Apologies in advance for the ultra-newbie post, but what is considered to be the "right" thing to do when exporting movies from Premiere (before converting to mpeg1): export files as .avi or .mov? Does one offer better results than the other? Does it even matter? Thanks for any insight.

It's a Premiere project, created with a bunch of clips in .mov format. I think the extension is .ppj . There are several export options, but really only Microsoft DV Avi, Microsoft Avi, and QuickTime make any sense. I'm just wondering which format is preferred by the experts ... or since they were captured as QT should this be the export format as well?
Thanks for any help. -
From what you said in first message I got that you want to export your project into MPEG-1
if you have AVISYNTH software , you can virtually encode it with TMPGEnc or any other encoder from Premiere but you can check for Plug-in in Premiere like PANASONIC Mpeg encoder or LSX or Nano Mpeg encoder, all of them have Plug-in for Premiere but for the best quality I offer you to get the TMPGEncoder from www.tmpgenc.com (its free) and get the avisynth and tutorials from www.videotools.net (it's free too) and enjoy the best quality with TMPGEnc
Mp3boy
PS: You can get their link from this url : http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcdtools.htm -
FYI the .ppj is the premiere extention it has nothing to do with the video format. And from what i understand the original format of the files where .mov. if you wanted to export to avi or mov i'd tell you go with the original format (mov) but your end format will be mpeg so as mp3boy said skip exporting to mov, go straight to mpg.

OK. Thanks for the help. I even found the tutorial on how to combine TMPGE + the Premiere plug-in at the videotoos.net site:
http://www.videotools.net/uk/guide_premiere_tmpgenc.php
Now the only problem is the plug-in isn't creating the IPCserver.AVI file as advertised in Step 7. Any ideas as to why this isn't happening? Thanks again. -
check were your actually saving the file(unless it's making another file type, which would be a forgotten setting(avs bieng that file type if i remeber correctly)) you might want to do a search in your comp for a file named ipcserver

Duhhhh. OK. That Premiere plug-in puts the IPCserver.API file in the root of C: I thought it might put it in the same directory as the Premiere project, but no. (It's a little confusing on the plug-in's part to put it in such a random place, but you can change the path by clicking on "Advanced Settings.")
Thanks to everyone who helped out. This is a very useful forum ... I just wish DV wasn't such damn voodoo ;-)
