How resource intensive is TMPGEnc while converting?

Since the conversion to MPG takes sooooo long, can the conversion be adversely affected by say surfing the net at the same time? I am running a P3-800 with 256MB ram on win98. Thanks!

Very resource intensive. But yes you can run other programs while TMPGenc is encoding, it won't hurt the quaility but will slow down the encoding some.

Truth is encoding is very slow. Might want to try CCE or think about upgrading your PC, sorry

encoding depends almost entirely on CPU speed......if you want faster encode, get faster CPU

RAM is only good if you wanna run multiple applications at once...so u need to have more RAM is u wanna encode and do other things

I really don't mind waiting, I just want to do other stuff at the same time - as long it doesn't do any harm to the finished product.

Just out of curiosity, would doubling my cpu speed to say 1.6ghz cut the encoding time significantly?

If you double your CPU speed, you will essentially half your encode time.

I encode movies and play games, surf the net, listen to tunes etc etc etc all at the same time with TMPG.

If your wanting to use your computer while encoding STAY AWAY FROM CCE. Thats the reasson its so fast, its such a cpu hog.....of course its faster.


As far as upgrading your system, it can make a big diffrence. I used to have a Duron 800mhz w/ 256mb ram. I upgraded to a 1.2ghx Duron w/ 512mb RAM.

For a DivX to VCD would take 4 to 6 hours depending the movie.
After the upgrade It now takes 2 to 3 hours.

To rip a DVD and encodinh with 2-pass it used to take from 15 to 24 hrs.
After the upgrade it now takes like 10 to 15 hrs.
