  1. Hello, I recently acquired a USB 3.0 Black Magic Intensity Shuttle from a friend and was looking on how I could make it work on my current motherboard which already has USB 3.0 on it. I did some research and learned in order for P55 mobos to work with this device, I need to get an add-on card, correct?

My current motherboard is a Gigabtye GA-P55A-UD3. And I can already confirm that the "You do not have enough bandwidth" appears despite having the firmware and driver at the latest version.

Looking at Black Magic's support they recommend the following for P55 mobos:
The USB 3.0 expansion card must be one of the following:

    • x4 lane PCI Express. This card can be fitted in a x4 lane or faster slot in any supported series of motherboard. We recommend the Asus U3S6.
    • x1 lane PCI Express 2.0. This card can be fitted in a x1 lane or faster PCI Express 2.0 slot in any supported series of motherboard. We recommend the Gigabyte GA-USB3 and the Shintaro USB 3.0 PCIe expansion card.
As I linked for the first suggestion, NewEgg is out of stock, and I don't plan to buy what seems to be the only source from a seller on Ebay for 70 dollars with overseas shipping.

Any suggestions for an add-on card? I believe that if I can get this to work with an add-on card instead of building a new computer, it'd be cheaper in the long run (after all, I got this Shuttle for free).

Despite the second PCIe x16 (running at x4) lane being at 2.0, it'll only run at 1.1 speeds, correct? My worry is not having enough bandwidth for it to work.

It'd be great if somebody else was in the same shoes as me.

Welp, those are a lot of questions. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It probably won't work, even though it should. I'd recommend you not to waste any time or money on this device. Just read the Intensity Shuttle Problem thread if you don't believe me.

I am not familiar with this card, but I share mufunyo's concerns. I've got an AMD motherboard from Gigabyte that fairly similar to what you have for Intel. The USB 3.0 on my mobo works fine. I've only got one device (for an external disk drive) that I can test it with but I've had no issues and it reported as working as USB 3.0. Having to consider buying an additional card to do USB 3.0 when your mobo is already supposed to do that sounds horribly broken to me. I took a quick look at mufunyo's link and it looks like no matter what you do, you're going to be in for a nightmare in trying to get this card to work. This device supposedly supports some kind of PCI connection in addition to USB 3.0 Are you unable to test the PCI option? If you buy a USB 3.0 you're going to have to put it in a PCI slot anyway so I'd think it would be more sensible to try the PCI approach first.

  4. Right, the thing is the P55's USB3.0 is capped in speed. Some hardware mess up, IDK. Also, I got this Shuttle for free. Luckily I was able to order the Asus U3S6 just now on Amazon for about 30 bucks. I'd rather spend 30 bucks trying things out than 200 for the PCIe Intensity card.

  5. Okay, I figured I'd return to let you know of my results of placing the U3S6 in the PCIe 4x lane.

    It was a success.

Despite being unable to update the firmware from 3.0.2.1 to a higher one (Plural controller hosts detected error.) I was able to get the device to work properly. No "not enough bandwidth" message here!

I've been fooling around with the recording, as well as using Virtual Dub to process it (deinterlacing, resizing, cropping etc.)

I can only record 480p-ish quality for now when trying out my Wii, (trying to go to 720p on my Xbox 360 makes it drop frames like a hobo), but even after recording 15 minutes straight, no laggy audio or skippy video.

Here's some examples, I'm pretty sure I could make it look better, but this footage is from the Wii, can't really do much about it lol.
