How do we determined by how many bitrates are suitable for our movie?
I've tried to googling this question, but most said: it depends on desired file size.
    Please help ...

Are you shooting or converting? In either case, what is the format? (H264? MPEG2? other?) What's the frame size?

If you are converting, try Handbrake and use one of the presets. Then check out the result, tweak the settings and convert again. Repeat as necessary.

If you don't care about filesize, look at constant quality/constant quantizer encoding. These methods find the best (variable) bitrate to meet the predefined quality requirement.

If you need a certain file size then you have little choice but to use a defined bitrate, and the question then becomes one of resolution to balance quality vs size

Ultimately, unless you choose constant quality then there is no simple answer, as each video has different requirements, and the final arbiter will by your own experience. That is something not easily passed on, but something earned by doing.

Maybe it required me to explained my question, which not detail enough ... SORRY.
In order to increase my movie collection items, I supposed to reduce it's size, by reducing it's bitrate and convert it to MKV.
So ... I unable to answer your question regarding to the frame size ... cos my frame size is vary.
    Thank you.

Is my decision/effort 's right? Please give me an opinion.
    Thank you

  5. Encode with x264 in CRF mode with a value of 18 and the "very fast" preset.

Wow! I understand it now ... Thank you.
But as I remembered, there is someone said that the bitrate that I used is to less / not enough.

    PS:
How to convert AVI file to MKV with HandBrake?
    * File > Open DVD ... it will directly detached my DVD-Rom
    * File > Open Folder ... it lead us to select a folder only ... not a file.
    Thank you.
