Hello
OK this is probably a really dumb question
When using an external USB sound card to output 5.1 sound.
Does the source signal have to already be 5.1 (multi channel) to output true 5.1 ?
Or does the sound card actually create the 5.1 output even if the source is only 2 channel ?
I am talking good quality cards here (Creative Sound Blaster or similar ilk)
As always any advice is appreciated
Thanks

Without additional signal processing rule is simple - you get at the output same signal as feeded to the input.

Sound cards are not magical!
It doesn't matter whether the sound card is internal or external, to get TRUE 5.1 out you must have 5.1 going in, otherwise it will only be simulated at best.
