  1. I'm trying to get a DVD into After Effects. With DVDShrink, I've managed to get the .vob files, but now how do I get it into After Effects without losing much quality?

  2. open in virtualdubmod or avidemux, export uncompressed AVI, or use lossless compression like huffyuv, lagarith, ut video codec

depending on the version of AE you are using, you should be able to import as .mpg as well (e.g. use vob2mpg)

  3. Is there a better way to get the .vob files than DVDShrink? It was fast and the video seemed to be decent quality, but I can't imagine it was the best quality since it only took like 5-10 minutes to go from DVD to .vobs.

Btw, using VirtualDubMod right now. I've heard about it a few times.

  4. If you use no compression, dvd shrink will give you an identical 1:1 rip, it's just copying the files of the DVD. So quality is unchanged

The problem is it doesn't support newer copy protection methods, so you may get artifacts if you are ripping a newer release (or it might not work at all)

  5. Typically I don't need to worry about copy protection. I'm just doing stuff for local people and their home videos.

VirtualDubMod ended up converting the vobs to avi, but the audio was a millisecond or two out of sync.

Back to the drawing board... (trying MPEG StreamClip) now.

If anyone has any other suggestions for getting a high-quality, editable-in-AE video, please let me know. (friggin' videos and all their codecs and stuff are an art in-and-of themselves)

you can't notice a ms or two. It has to be 40 or so before humans can detect it

A linear shift can be fixed, just use a +/- audio delay

    or try avidemux or vob2mpg

I use avisynth + DGIndex but there is a bit of a learning curve for writing scripts

  7. Writing scripts? I've heard a few things about that. I'm a programmer so I know what scripts are and stuff, but I just don't know how they apply to converting videos.

I am running AE CS4, and it will happily take mpg files as input. Just VOB2MPG the discs to get MPG files, and use those directly in AE. No need for scripts or unnecessary conversions
