  1. Hi - I work at an English language center, and I'm creating a multi-media CD that can be easily used by multiple teachers at the center. So far I have been making Data CDs using Nero, because I can use images on some tracks and video on other tracks. It's important that there are multiple tracks so that we can easily find the information depending what lesson we're working on. I've downloaded most of the content from the internet. Here is the problem:

When a file is downloaded as avi, or if it's flv and then converted to avi with no other change, there is no problem (yay)

But when an avi file (whether it was originally avi or if i converted it from flv) is edited using Windows Movie Maker, the resulting file plays fine on my computer (Windows Media Player) but when it is burned onto the Data CD, only the video plays and there is no audio. I'm playing the final CD on a simple Phillips DVD player.

I am using Nero 7 Ultra Edition

Thanks so much for the help!!

Are you making a wmv with wmm? And just burning as data with nero? If so try convert the wmv to a standard avi divx/xvid instead using for example divx converter.

  3. No, all my files are avi by the time i start using Nero. I had that trouble first, when i was editing using Windows Movie Maker the end file was wmv, but now I am careful to always check the box to save it as an AVI. so by the time I burn using Nero, all the files are AVI

    thanks anyway, any other ideas?

Avi with what video and audio codec? The last time I used wmm I could only save as avi with dv video.

  5. It doesn't HAVE to be a data CD, if anyone knows another way to get the same end result (ie, multiple tracks that are easy to scroll through, some video clips and some images)

  6. i'm sorry, i'm not sure how to check the codecs. as for wmm, after you hit save to my computer, then next, you can change the movie setting (if you use the default it will be wmv.) under 'other settings' you can choose DV-AVI (NTSC). Is that my problem? the resulting file is named .avi, but is it not a 'real' avi?

    thanks so much

  7. plus, i usually compress the resulting AVI because it is so large, using virtualdub. after selecting xvid under compression, i choose 'Save as AVI' under file. so the end result should be AVI, right?

btw, whether i compress or not i still have the same audio trouble burning with Nero

What audio compression are you using in virtualdub? Try use mp3 in virtualdub under Audio->compression. Install lamemp3 if you can't select it in virtualdub.

A data cd with avi xvid should work fine.

  9. Well so far I was choosing Video->compression, then save to AVI, and not doing anything about the audio. I'm trying to install lamemp3 now but i'm getting an error message: The file 'LameACM.acm' on Lame MP3 Install Disk is needed. Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

    I can't find the file.

Anyway is making these changes in VirtualDub really going to help?? Don't forget that the audio is already missing even before i compress

thanks so much for your help

You must extract ALL files to a folder and then right click on lameamc

But you said that the resulting file plays fine on my computer? THen I assume it's audio AFTER you edited it with WMM.....

  11. Right, all final versions of the files, whether compressed or uncompressed, play on Windows Media Player on my computer. It's only when I burn them using Nero (compressed or uncompressed) that i have the audio problem using a DVD player. I'm sure you're right that the wmm editing is causing the problem, will lameacm allow me to get the audio back?

i think I've installed lameacm correctly now, but there's no change in the virtualdub audio menu (should i restart the computer?)

  12. Let me correct that - my first strategy actually was to edit using Nero, and I didn't use wmm at all. Using Nero I also lost the audio during the editing process. So it's not only wmm that's causing the problem
