    Converting from what source?

there are literally dozens or more to choose from.

What your source is will dictate what suggestions you get. If its high def that limits the choices a little bit.

    the usual suggestions:

    format factory
ripbot264 - newest version has divx plus output option
    super
    xvid4psp

Let us know if your using high def sources or not. Also are you ripping from a dvd? Has the dvd been ripped with another program? Use dvdfabdecrypter to rip the disc (free version is available). Then you can take the video_ts folder and convert from there.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

No matter what front end program (GUI) you use, if you are still using the exact same Xvid and DivX codecs and exact codec settings, you would get the exact same results, so what is more important is the codec settings themselves. Best to study the codec settings if you want to understand the encoding results.

I use Virtual Dub most times, but there are a lot of other programs, as mentioned above, that will give you good results and some greatly simplify going from DVD to Xvid/DivX.

So do I have to rip the DVD before I can convert it to DivX. Or can I convert straight from DVD?

if you have anydvd or dvdfab passkey then you can convert straight from the dvd. Otherwise you will need to rip first. Personally I prefer ripping fist.

  10. Details specifically for DVD to Xvid AVI:

    1) Rip (decrypt) with DVDFab as a VIDEO_TS folder.
    2) Use DgIndex to create an index file of the VOB files.
    3) Mpeg2Source() in AviSynth, plus any filtering.
    4) Open the AVS script in VirtualDub and encode as Xvid AVI. Or send to x264 for h.264 in MP4/MKV.

Many of the earlier mentioned programs use a similar process but doing it "manually" gives you full control of everything.
