  1. Hey folks, been a while.

I have several TV shows in DVD format on my external HD which is hooked up to my telly, but only some of the VOBs actually play. Anyone ever try this or have this problem? Do I have to burn these to disc to get them to play properly?

  3. hech, the DVP5990 doesn't recognize the IFO files. All it shows is the VOB files.

Use VOB2MPG to extract the video and audio as MPG files and play those instead.

  5. Thanks guns. I don't know a tonne about different file formats but a lot of MPEGs I've seen looked like crap. Ah well, for some reason I thought the 5990 could handle VOBs. Gawd only knows where I got the idea.

VOB is a container used by DVDs. It can contain multiple video, audio and subtitle tracks, as well as menus. The video in DVD VOBs is encoded with mpeg-2 (generally, although in some cases mpeg-1 is admissible). All VOB2MPG does is take the video and audio and put it in an MPG container. It does not re-encode, so it does not change the video and audio in anyway. It will look exactly the same as the source DVD because it is the same video.

  7. Note that some of the VOB files on a DVD will contain very little data. For example, the menus are VOB files and may contain just a few frames.

  8. Thanks again, Guns. You too, Jag. Might just give that software a try.
