  1. Hi, i have a TB Hard drive that i put media on. I connect the hard drive to my tv with a usb cable and play moves on my tv(AVI's) which works a treat BUT i was thinking of playing HD movies. I have a 720p movie at 4.5GB, the file is a .MKV and in the title it says "...720p bluray x264 CBGB". This file was not recognised by my tv so i figure i have to convert it, is this possible and would the quality remain 720p HD? any help would be much appreciated.

  2. Look in the manual for the TV to see what file types it can read. Then try to match those with the 720p conversion. What make and model TV are we talking about?

The built-in media player is very limited. It handles mp3 audio, jpeg stills, and mpeg1/Divx and Xvid (generic mpeg-4). From what I can see, at SD quality only. Better off getting a media player like the WDTV or similar so you can make the most of the HD side of things.

  5. Spend US$50 to US$100 on a standalone media player like the WDTV Live and you can watch most videos (HD and SD) without spending time converting them.

No. This process still leaves you with a HD file, which your TV cannot play, in a format that your TV cannot play.

If you aren't willing or able to get a standalone media player that can handle HD material, stop downloading HD material. Any that you do have will have to be converted down to SD quality/resolution (i.e. less than 720 pixels wide) and encoded with basic home-profile Divx/Xvid in an AVI container. Xvid4psp can do this.
