  1. I got an AG-1970 a couple days ago and want to get it working again for my collection.

The display shows that a tape is loaded, but it is not. When I push the eject button, both belts start moving, but nothing else engages. It stops after a few seconds and still thinks that a tape is loaded. No reaction when pushing any of the other buttons like play or rewind. I can’t see any broken parts.

Below 2 videos showing the top and bottom of the mechanism while pushing the eject button, and I attached one photo.

1.) Do you guys have access to the service manual? The SM for the AG-1980 won't work, they use different mechanism.

2.) What mechanism is being used in the AG-1970?

3.) Anybody have access to the service manual for the AG-1970 mechanism?

4.) Any idea why my 1970 isn't seeing that the tape is unloaded? By the way, the solenoid clicks once, the mode switch isn't spinning at all when I hit eject.

  2. I'm not familiar with that model but i'd say probably the switch mode is dirty needs cleansing with alcohol for contacts and a qtip. The purpose of the switch mode is to detect and tell to the servos motors that a tape is loaded/ejected/playing( ? ). Then, the information is sent forward. Generally you have to disassemble the mechanics parts to have access to it because it's on the board below. Watch videos of 12voltvids on youtube that's my advice, keyword : vcr

I just removed the mode switch and cleaned it. What a pain in the ass on this mechanism! The inner contact areas look pretty good, I have seen much worse.

Cleaning didn't change the issue. The VCR still thinks that a tape is loaded. Also, the mode switch doesn't even turn in the current eject sequence.

While I had the mechanism open I checked the solenoid and that works, engages once when I hit the eject button.

There is something else going on and I need to know the version of this mechanism (its is not a K mechanism like in the AG-1980) and the service manual for the AG-1970 as well as the mechanism.

Check the tape detection switch, If the default position is closed for no tape that means the switch is always open and there is something broken or corroded preventing the contact, If the default position is open for no tape that means it is shorted somehow, The mechanism does not eject anything because it is already in the eject state based on the position of the mode switch

  7. I have a JVC HR-S4500 VCR with similar problems. It is the load timing problem which I have been told is easy to fix. It is a mechanical issue involving the gears which drive the loading mechanism.

Indeed, that's where the tape detection switch resides, I believe it detects 3 positions of the tape, No tape, Tape inserted and tape loaded and it has an alignment to it.
