Haven't used snow tires since the 70's. I like fishtailing, 180's and 360's in the snow...................
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........

All-weather tires year-round here. Since they outlawed studded tires, snow tires aren't enough help when they are truly needed to be worthwhile.

No snow tires needed around here. No snow either. One reason I moved here. We should have a low of about 50F tonight and 75F during the day, that's winter here.

I didn't know that Marks & Spencers did tyres now! (Sorry deadrats, it's a British thing!)

They're forecasting 4 - 5cm of snow here tomorrow, so I think I'll take my chances. (Crikey, I hope I don't regret typing that! )

Ditto. There's just no point in snow tires anymore.

M+S rating gets though most local conditions here in the Sierra foothills, but when the big storms hit, chains and 4x4 are a must. Roads are steep and temps hover 25-40 F causing ice. Just need to wait out the big storms a day to three. Big storms usually mean power out for days like last week.

Where i live snow tires make a huge difference compared to all season tires,i get up the hills with no problems while others are stuck sliding back.

Yes, it comes down to hills and temp. When I visit flatlands in the far north the deep freeze is like diving on dirt. When the surface thaws and refreezes each day and you add hills things get slippery.

Try again in, say, February, when we've got cabin fever. Up until about Christmas it's not so bad.

Me, I'll make a turkey sandwich (Thanksgiving leftovers), open an ale and sit by the woodstove.

Oh yeah, all-season tires here. Haven't bought snow tires in at least 30 years. I remember when the "all-season" radials came out they said nobody needed snow tires any more, or something like that. Well, they ain't as good as snow tires when conditions are really bad. But you can get by with them *most* places south of Lake Erie if you don't absolutely have to get somewhere before the roads get plowed.

I live in a hilly area, near a medium-sized city. Snow removal isn't what it used to be, and with heavy traffic, a significant snowfall tends to turn to ice overnight. Snow tires sans studs won't help with that.

M+S tires are for after the city/county snow plow but before the black ice re-freeze.

This all varies by local temps, snow depth and driver skill. If the temp stays below freezing, driving is easy on flat plowed city streets. If the temp allows thaw then refreeze late afternoon, you get black ice. Snow tires don't help with ice. Studs help a bit.

In the frozen north you can drive 24x7 between storms. In the 25-40 F regions it is all about temperature and black ice.

The biggest problem I had with ice and snow were I used to live was idiot drivers. I would be running chains with rubber bands and cruising along at about twenty five and they would pass me with just street tires, then slide off the road right in front of me. I would wave to them and smile and continue on. Somehow, I don't miss any of that. I even hate seeing a snowcone now.

  21. That reminds me of when I lived in Greenville, South Carolina, circa 1990, give or take.

They have no snow removal equipment there. None. Why would they? It never *really* snows there. Every Winter, if the weather forecast called for flurries, people would jam the grocery stores to buy milk, bread and toilet paper. It was a running joke with the local news reporters.

But it never amounted to anything. Until one year it did, about 6 inches or so. Interstate 85 was closed and they called out the National Guard to rescue stranded motorists. News helicopters landed on the median and reporters interviewed people. No shit.

Next day I had to go finish a job on the other side of town in my rear-drive pickup and was driving maybe 20 mph, tops. I couldn't believe how many cars were in the ditches. (I grew up in PA). One guy in an SUV passes me, then tries to turn at an intersection. He goes right across the street, over the curb, into some bushes. Whoopsy. I guess he thought he was invincible in an SUV. He found out he couldn't brake to a stop any faster in it.

I dealt with a lot of 'snow bunnies' (People that don't know snow) in my former job. We plowed the mountain roads regularly. I don't know how many times I've watched a motorist spend a fair amount of time putting chains on the rear wheels of a front wheel drive car. Also fun watching city people with bald tires and no chains try to drive in the snow. My favorite was a local sheriffs car that rear ended a CHP (State police) car in the snow. That must have been a fair bit of paperwork.

Just be careful out there and watch out for other drivers.

Local tow truck drivers here say over half of their business is pulling "flatlander" 4x4 SUV drivers out of the ditches.

  24. Don't have snow tires. We don't get much snow, but when we do it's nasty wet stuff that is miserable to drive on, so we leave the car parked until the roads are clear. Bus service is great and most amenities are within walking distance.

Few people use snow tyres here. We only get an inch of snow on average - and it usually melts within a few days.

Having said that, this year the UK has had the earliest significant snowfall in years.

My son's school bus was stuck in the snow MILES from here. I just got back from dropping my son off at school with nothing but all-season tires on the car(2010 VW Golf).

We do not have snow tyres in the UK...... and therefore we are suffering a standstill in places at the moment...snow in the UK stops airports and trains and traffic .......... still it gives us many days off work.
