    I second that. Just got one & love it. This is my third Philips and have had great luck. The upscaling of dvix/xvid looks great on my 40" Samsung. I especially love the 2.0 USB port. I've got about 100 old movies in AVI format that when I want to watch one I just transfer to a 4GB stick (in about 45 seconds), pop it into the USB port. They look as good on the Samsung (or even better with the upscaling) as they ever did on my Panasonic 27" which always had an excellent picture. I hardily recommend the Philps. If your local Walmart doesn't have it, order on line & have it sent to your local store...free shipping. I paid $39.00. What a bargin.

    if you wanna get all the necassary features like divx/xvid playback and region free and PAL playback then the philips model is the way to go but it's longevity is questionable. I've had 2...5982 and 5990 and they've both crapped out in the last 3 years. I will eventually get one of these 3560 models but if i had the money i'd go for a Pioneer and see how long $90 gets me along

    my dad has an old dvp-642 and its still goin strong. Don't make em like that anymore

    For what it's worth, I have an old DVP-642 that is also still going strong. What I have found is that it's absolutely critical that you have plenty of open space around the player so it can sufficiently air cool. Most people have some sort of enclosed entertainment system that they put their players in and heat builds up in those. I deliberately bought a not very tall but somewhat long TV stand at Best Buy that has 3 glass shelves and is open on all the sides. I get good air flow through that. The recommendation for the DVP3560 is a good one, but how long it lasts will probably depend in part on your ability to air cool it properly. Unfortunately that is how everybody builds players these days. Consumers demand small size and the small size means that being able to air cool it is critical to keeping it alive. If you have to put it in some kind of enclosed entertainment center then at least try to remove all the junk you can from around the player to give it as much space as possible.

  6. my kids are running the 5990 like a horse since I bought when it came out. 7 days a week 52 weeks of sesame street

    I think using the USB feature put less stress on the player since there is no moving parts involved

  7. I prefer the Philips 5990 or 5992 over the 3560. It costs a bit more but has a USB port. You can play media files from a hard drive or flash drive connected to that port. It's easily made region free (or set to any particular region) with a few button presses on the remote. It plays both PAL and NTSC DVD (converts PAL to NTSC in North America). There are 3rd party firmware patches too. About the only Xvid feature it doesn't support is three warp point GMC. It's a standard definition player so it won't play anything over a 720x576 frame size.

    <edit>
    The 5990/5992 seem to be hard to find now. And a lot more expensive than they used to be.

    these other models i had i guarantee havent played 200 each...just came home christmas 2008 and the 5982 didnt work...no picture...the 5990 now takes around 5 to 10 minutes to load up a dl disc and the dvd5's play but while they play, you can hear the drive mechanism moving constantly....i thought it was scratched discs but nope...very strange...i just cant catch a break lol...i'll just eat it and buy one of these from wal mart soon...for the money it cant be beat

  13. There are some other negatives about the Philips 5990/5992: Disc handling is slow. It take seven second (from standby) to open the drive bay. The remote control is mediocre (although that's a huge improvement over earlier crappy Philips remotes). Flimsy construction.

    thanx for the heads up MJA...does this one do PAL? If so then it might be worth an investment. I looked at a $90 pioneer but I figured $40 bux for 18 months use beats $90...i have no Blu Ray capability atm..no lcd..burner etc but for the low price it may be worth a try

    yeah i agree on the construction...for what it does i can live with it...they even have some Coby's on sale here and there at fry's for $20 to $30...not much in the way of features but it does PAL discs

    I bought 3 Philips 5992s last year at Costco about this time. Is there anything better price/performance in the last year?

  16. Another player that's often recommended for Divx/DVD is the Pioneer 420.

    This Philips is good: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003LWXJ2A?ie=UTF8&tag=thdifa-20&linkCode=as2&camp=17...SIN=B003LWXJ2A
    Under $40 shipped from Amazon. Hard to beat that.

    DVD player, plays Divx, reads DVD-R/DVD+R quite well.

    In the Walmart lineup, only the Magnavox models still have a S-Video connector. They have 2 Magnavox models online for under $50: $27 and $37, which are $2 more at my local Walmart store. I have 2 of the $27 model, and 1 of the $37 model. The first $27 unit with a 2004 manufacture date crapped out after a few months of use. The second $27 unit with a 2010 manufacture date doesn't get much use and is still working good. The $37 models have a 2009 or 2010 manufacture date. They work OK in general but the $37 model is better at playing a variety of discs. Neither are very good about handling damaged or dirty discs, causing freezes & skips unless you wipe off the fingerprints first. I had to clean the laser lens on the $37 unit after only 6 months but I have a dusty environment.
