    I have a 41 GB m2ts file that has one h264 video track, one DTS audio track, one AC3 audio track, and one SRT subtitle file. The movie is Avatar. The subtitle track is for the NAVI language scenes. I stream movies to my PS3 from my PC. I am doing the Ripbot encoding for 2 reasons:

    1) I want to encode with a keyframe interval of 24 so that FF,RW,GOTO features are robust
    2) I would like to build the subtitles into the picture as you can't do subtitles when streaming. (I have no interest in transcoding)

    The h264 track and AC3 track are roughly 35 GB in size. The settings I am using are as follows:

    CQ=18
    Deblocking -2,-2
    AVC Level: 4.0
    buffer size 25000,25000

    I added '-- keyint 24' and left everything else the same. The MKV file that is created is only 17.5 GB. The subtitles are correctly built into the video. However the video flickers and demonstrates other compression artifacts. I am at a loss as to why it made the file so much smaller and has these problems.

    As a test I upped the AVC level to 5.1 and buffer size to 50000,50000. That file is almost 19.5 GB but it has all the same problems. Can anybody explain why the video size is cut in half and has these problems.?

    I don't care about file size. How do you get the best quality from Ripbot encodes?

    Sounds to me like conversion for nothing.

    In Constant Quality mode encoder decides automatically how much bitrate is required in order to reach specific quality level. With CRF@18 you should get sizes below 10 GB. Sometimes it can be ~5 GB and sometimes ~10GB. Remember movies with wider aspect ratio (letterboxed) and less dynamic will require less data than full 16:9 frame with lot of action. 2-pass should be ONLY used if you put your movies on CD,DVD,BD. Also Constant Quality mode does not need second pass. You save a lot of time!

    Using CQ18 I lost half the original size (rember the source is h264) and has all these problems. Why is that? Is there a setting problem? Is there something special about how this movie?

    What problems, but does it look close to the source being smaller?

    To me if it looks the same as source why not go with it..........

    I have used tsMuxer to extract a one-minute clip. Unfortuneately the clip is still 55 meg large. I have uploaded it to here:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/430301415/Sample.m2ts

    I am trying to understand whyRipBot a) made it half the size of the original and B) has the problem you will see in the clip.

    Thanks to anyone who can check it out and help!
