Apex 500W SetUp

I have Apex 500W. And I can not to play my VCD on it.
Some friends advise me to check PBC setting, but I can not find it in the menu.
Can somebody help me to find this setting?

You don't have to worry about PBC. Just pop in the vcd and it should play. Make sure you putting in a real vcd not just a mpeg file on a disc.

The 500w plays VCD's fine. It loves Green media too.

You (or who ever made it) could of authored the mpeg to the wrong spec. Head over to the tools section http://www.vcdhelp.com/vcdtools.htm
and download the NTSC demo disc towards the bottom. Burn it on a RW. If it doesn't play, take your DVD player back, and buy a new one.

My 500W plays nearly all fomats (that's is selling point on the forum!) The only trouble I had was with one STANDARD VCD I burned, but I'm doing all sorts of non-standards, and it's working like a charm. Just a slight annoyance when you FF/RW on a MPEG-1 VBR movie (it will go out of synch either not at all, for a little bit, or permanently). But they all play nicely!

This sounds like maybe 1- not encoded properly, 2- burned incorrectly, or 3- bad unit altogether.

What program and settings did you use to encode?

Try burning your VCD in NERO, and whether it's a compliant bitrate or not, check "Make Standard Compliant CD". DO NOT USE DISC-AT-ONCE.

When done, try to play on your computer (use PowerDVD or WinDVD or a player that supports VCD's). If it plays there, and not on the Apex, you have yourself a bad player.


By the way... what does PBC mean/do anyway? The manual doesn't specify very well...

Always use disc at once. Even for SVCD. That is the what the standard spec calls for. Nothing but disc at once.

PowerDVD and WinDVD are just file players. They will play anything. PowerDVD will even play DIVX.

As for PBC:
Play Back Control. When on, this allows your player to take advantage of the extensive options offered by the VCD 2.0 standard. Like menus, auto pause points, entry points. Turned off, your player will opperate without any menus or other things. It plays the first mpeg track and continues to the end.

OK, so I goofed. I looked at another post www.vcdhelp.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?topic=39140&forum=1 , looks like it's contentious, but I guess no harm doing it the way I always did (TAO). But now I will try DAO, just "because"

Yes, I know, I was only suggesting to use (PowerDVD) because if you set to Disc mode, you can sort-of tell if your VCD burned "readable". Should auto-play when you click "Play" (you shouldn't have to hunt for the file). Unless you have 2 or 3 standalones around the house!
