  1. I tried to use virtualdub to split the file but the output AVI file is very huge.
What I need is to split the 10 GB file into smaller files (1 GB each or 30 minutes each) so they can be downloaded over the internet.
Please let me know if there are any other programs to split an divx file.
    Thanks

You're kidding, right? Each 30-minute portion of a Divx .avi is a whole GB???? That's no different from a DVD movie. What bitrate was used? A lot of people get 2 whole hours of divx / xvid movies down to 700MB.

Okay, in VirtualDub, which Video > Compression setting did you use? I have a feeling you left it as an uncompressed .avi.

  3. To be honest, I never used virtualdub before and just downloaded the program and used it with the default settings.
The divx file I got from a friend. It is a 4 hour HD show that was 24 GB and he managed to compress to 10 GB divx.
I will check the compression settings. Anything else I should check to reduce the size of the out file yet keep a good quality picture?
    Thanks again for the help.

You can do this with VirtualDUBMOD.

Set Video to direct stream copy,
then stream -> stream list, right-click on the audio and make sure direct stream copy is selected.

Then choose file -> save as.

In the dialog box, check "segment output file", enter the size in MB you wish each segment to be, (if you want 1GB segments, enter 1024)
make sure Video mode is set to "Direct stream copy" instead of the default "Full processing mode".

You will get a set of files named yourfile.00.avi, yourfile.01.avi and so on.

Might be a good idea to inspect each of them when VirtualDUBMOD is done to see if they play back properly.
