I bought a Motorola HD DVR QIP6416/2006 at a garage sale for 5 bux. It has a Verizon sticker on it, so I am guessing it was originally issued to a homeowner as part of their HD TV package. My question is: Can I use this as a stand alone Audio/Video recorder? Any help and/or suggestions?

You can't do anything with it. It's useless without activation and it is also technically stolen property.
Verizon only rents their set-top boxes, and it should have been returned to them, since they still own it. The person who sold it to you is liable for whatever Verizon wants to charge them for not returning the box, plus whatever else they may still owe on their account. If Verizon is like most cable companies, if you try to use it for your own Verizon service, they may decide to collect from you instead. -
Thanks for the heads up. I guess I should have known better. I will return it to the local Verizon office ASAP.
