  1. I'm trying to cut a divx avi in two using VirtualDub (1.4.13). I've done it several times before but this one gives me problems. When I open it I get the "usual" message about "improper VBR" etc. But when I try to cut the file in two it gets cut at the wrong place and not the place I ask it to cut. When I play the new avi the audio/video is completely out of sync and the new file starts several seconds earlier than where I set "selection start" in VirtualDub. Anyone got any clues??

  2. I'm guessing the avi is cut at the wrong place because virtualdub cuts at keyframes. So to get it cut where you want you'd have to re-encode the video instead of doing a direct stream copy. I don't know why the sound is out of sync though.

vdub_mp3_freeze is the tool you want if you want to cut an .avi file with VBR audio. You can download it at the Tools section of this site.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

  4. Thanks for the replies! When I cut with vdub_mp3_freeze the file is still cut at the wrong place (because of keyframes I guess) but the audio is in sync so it doesn't matter!

Only cut at a keyframe, and use Nandub - particularly with VBR audio. Nandub will allow you to cut to the nearest keyframe at a given size.

Use the video->smart rendering in virtualdub. It will allow you to cut exactly without reconver the entire the video.

  10. Yes, use VirtualDub's Full Processing Mode and Smart Rendering. That will give you frame accurate cutting and it will only reencode the cut GOPs.

What version of VirtualDub are you using? Newer version (the last year or two) have far fewer problems with VBR MP3 audio sync (although they still warns you).
