  1. I've taken the advice of some of the participants in the forum, and their advice was quite helpful. Thanks to Cart Wheel and spiderman2k1. My next problem is this: I was capping a long piece and it froze at 23 minutes, then I rebooted and it froze at 33 minutes. I have plenty of HD space, and i'm using ATI TV Wonder Card with it's television software. I have a PIII 1000mHz with 256 SDRam, and the Geforce 2 AGP Card (32MB). The DMA is enabled on my hard drives. Win ME is running, and the ATI software is version 2.0. I'm going to try out version 7 tonight, but I really don't think that's it.

Are you capturing direct to MPEG - maybe its a heat issue. Open your case wide up and try again.

Are you capturing uncompressed - maybe its hitting the 2gb filesize limit (old-AVI standard. unless ATI's software does 4GB (new AVI standard) which is the single filesize limit of FAT32). Maybe VirtualDub and its Multi-segment capture would help?

I don't have an ATI card so I'm just guessing, but seeing as how its the whole system that is locking up and not a single program, its probably a temperature issue.

  3. It almost sounds like it may be a thermal issue. Does your machine run hot? I had this problem when I tried to push my CPU just a bit too far beyond its rated specs. I had the same symptoms - freezes after the CPU was pushed well into the capture. The CPU health status said it was running way too hot. When I backed things off a bit it was fine.

If you think it just might be a thermal issue try doing a capture with the case cover off. If it improves you may need to add a case fan or two. Or get a better quality heatsink and fan.

  4. I will investigate the thermal issue, thanks guys. I just installed the updated drivers and Multimedia software, and it seems to be less demanding on the cpu.....if it persists I'm looking into a new fan.

    Again thanks for your input.

  5. I'm new to all this (I've been working with video for about a month) but I had a similar problem (I could capture for 5 to 15 min before my system froze). I tried all the setting changes, nothing worked. Then I tried the easiest (overlooked) change - reduced the screen res to 800x600 (I have a 21 monitor so I usually use a much higher res). All the problems went away. Capture was limited only by the input (2 hr video tape). I droped about 30 frames/hr, mostly because of noise at the transitions (source was Hi8 home video). Try it. Its an easy fix. Good luck. (One day video capture/edit will be fast and easy for all of us.)
