I am using Windows 98SE and have to constantly work around the 4GB file size limit when capturing video. What upgrade is the best solution for this? Will Windows 2000 fix it or must I go to XP? I have a 60GB hard drive used strictly for video caputure/conversion.
Thanks in advance...

You're out of luck in Win98. 4GB is the limit of ANY file size. Check out this explanation...

Use/upgrade to win2k or winxp and partition the drive as NTFS. Or you can upgrade and then convert your fat32 partition to ntfs using a command line in start/run box...

NO NEED TO CHANGE!!!
Capture with VirtualDub (enable multisegment capture) and you won´t have ANY problem with large captures (I used to capture 15-20 Gb videos) 8) -
I had the same problem..but my problem was big...
I updated my HD to NTSF and began to youse Win2000 but then I found out that my capture card couldn't run i 2000. Then I installed win98 again and found out that Vdub had a "Multisegment Capture (spill system)".
This split your avi file up in smaller pices and then you just open the first segment in Vdub, frameserve and put it in TMPEG.
You whon't notis the splits and you can capture aslong as you have enough HD space.
This will help:

But what if my split AVI files end up at 4.3GB when I combine them into one MPEG-2 file? I still have the 4GB file problem.
I ran the XP upgrade advisor last night and there are quite a few things on my system that will not work (Modem, Scanner...).
Thanks for the replies....

If your AVI file ends up at 4.3 Gigs, your MPG file won't nearly end up that big. So let's say you use the spill system... you'll have an AVI file 4.0 Gigs and an AVI file .3 Gigs. VirtualDub will seemlessly put them back together (you won't see any break or pause in the video), then when you "Frameserve" it to a program like TMPGEnc, TMPGEnc will encode the entire AVI file (both pieces put together, but never saved as a single AVI file) as an MPG file.
I have Windows 98 (not even Special Edition), and regularly capture 20 Gigs at a time by using the spill system. You'll never need to resave the AVI file as another AVI file... just put your AVI pieces together (VirtualDub does this automatically), edit out anything you need to edit out (commercials, boring scenes of the movie, etc), then Frameserve to TMPGEnc. Check your final MPG movie, if it works, erase all the pieces, burn the MPEG as a VCD, and get ready to do it all over again.
Ignore anyone who says you should go to an NTFS system. There's no sense in it when Windows 98 and the Spill System works perfectly. -
What I was asking was about the final MPEG-2 (for DVD) file. If I convert all the AVI's into one MPEG file and the MPEG file is over 4GB then I still have a problem. I am capturing about 2 hours worth of VHS video of a family member in a football game. It is high motion. When I convert to MPEG to a quality that is acceptable, the MPEG file is over 4GB and the program blows up. The DVD can hold 4.7GB of data. This is where the problem lies.
Thanks for you reply....

I see now... that's different, because if you were recording an MPG file for a VCD, the MPG files would be 10Megs/Minute. You'd have to have a movie that was 400 Minutes to fill a 4 Gig file. If you're making it for a DVD, you'll have to use a different MPG format, and that's not something I know much about. Sorry.

That's OK. I appreciate the information. I have VirtualDub but cannot seem to get it to work with my Dazzle Hollywood-DV Bridge device. I have been using Ulead's DVD MovieFactory to capture, convert, and burn my DVD's. I may have to give VirtualDub another shot. I like the split file idea.
Once again, thanks for your help.

Okay, I don't know mush about all this DVD-thing, but if all goes wrong, just split the movie up in two pices or more. I mean you counden't have play constantly for 2 houers, there gotta be some breaks just cut it the. Then it would be easyer if you like only whant to see the second half then just push forward to the next chapter (if it works that way).
How is that dazzel card, does it rip good (VCD, SVCD, DVD)? -
The Dazzle card works well for me. I have had no problems capturing from VHS or Digital8. It is after I get it on the PC that my problems begin.
Thanks for the reply....
