In most cases, you cannot just save mpeg files to a disk. They must be saved in a VCD format. Also, my Sony DVD drive (although it states that it can play VCD disks) will only play them if I burn them on a CDRW disk.
HTH,

the reason why it cant is because it does not support cd-r vcds.

hey again
i forgot to say that my dvd player (as it says) supports cd-r, cd-rw, mp3..don't recall it saying 'vcd'...does it make a difference if i want to make a vcd? is cd-r, cd-rw,mp3 enough to support a movie which is created by nero---vcd or svcd? i'm sorry if i'm confusing all of you

I have not done any SVCD disks, but the .avi files that I have successfully burned to a VCD have the following characteristics:
originally the .avi files were 720X480 44100 khz
You must format them as a VCD:
352X240 44100 khz
I am sure that Nero offers a template for this. If not there is a freeware product TMPEGnc that I have used with great success.

so you don't have to convert .avi to .mpg????? in order to watch them on a standalone dvd player???
-
You don't have to convert your avi to mpeg if you are useing Nero 5.5
If you select vcd from nero then find your avi and drag it to the bottom. Nero will encode it for you. Granted it is slow but it encodes it and writes it to cd for you. If you've already encoded it to an mpeg then drag your mpeg there instead of the avi file. -
REALLY?!!!!!!!
you're kidding me?! oooooo my god i love you..you just saved most of my nerves !THANK YOU..!!!
.one more thing.....if on my standalone player it says that it can play CD-RW AND CDRs and Mp3s.....will it play vcds???????
does it HAVE TO STATE that it playes VCDs like on some standalone dvd players?????
THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUU GUYS SO MUCH!!! -
Dude you might wanna give up now, having looked at the other two models that this company make, it doesn't look like they support vcds. Sorry to bring you the bad news

you must decode youre avi files to mpeg using TMPEGenc 1.2,then split them in 2 pieces of 500 mb en burn them with nero 5.5 as a vcd to youre cd r or cd rw.
the best cd r`s are vivastar a very cheap brand but it will work on every dvd player even stand alone player`s
