  1. I've just discovered that d-clicking an AVI or MPG file opens MediaInfo (0.7.34) rather than the programs I've had associated with these extensions for years. Worse, those types no longer even appear in the Tools > Folder Options > File Types list. They'll have to be added from scratch unless anyone knows a smarter way please?

I had many options accessible from a r-click, all of which will now have to be tediously restored.

Probably true of other movie types too, I haven't yet checked.

Anyone else had similar experience, or have any idea as to the possible cause please?

  3. Thanks.

I emailed the author and got the reply:
"This has not changed for 3 or 4 years. You can deactivate it in the preferences of MediaInfo."

But I can see no setting for this in Preferences here.

Maybe he means it was an option in Setup? If so, down to me that I missed it this time.

Anyone with any more thoughts on this please?

The odd thing is that I'm almost positive I've played AVI and MPG with my familiar programs (VirtualDub and MediaPlayer Classic respectively) more recently than the last update of MediInfo...

  4. Just right click on a media file and select Open With -> Choose Program. Select the media player you want and checkmark the "Always use this program to open the selected kind of file" option. Association fixed.

Or, in MPC select View -> Options -> Player -> Formats. Checkmark the formats you want to associate with MPC.

  5. Thanks, yes, I know how to associate files. But I was wondering how this happened. Also, as mentioned, I had multiple choices of program in my right-click menu, so Always is inappropriate. (I use a program called OpenExpert to configure these.)

I'm also hoping for feedback on my other query about MediaInfo setup or preferences.

Right click and Open With is still available after using always.

Unfortunately, Windows and other programs are always screwing around with file associations. It's too bad there's no way to lock them.

To keep programs or other users from taking control of your file types...

    1. Uninstall program which has taken over file types.

    2. Use regedit and navigate to...

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Unknown\shell\openas\command\

    change default value...

    %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1

    to...

    %SystemRoot%\system32\rundll32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,OpenAs_RunDLL %1 %2

    3. Reinstall program;

    4. Change the value back to default or your open with command will be greyed out.

This will keep most programs or other users from changing file types. Some programs have figured a way to get around this but it does work for most programs. I have to do this every time I have to reinstall NERO Ultimate because it hijacks all my file types.

You may have to create the DWORD and DWORD value if it got removed by a program uninstall.

  8. Thanks both. I'll try that registry hack.

I was pleased to find that my Open With options (assigned with OpenExpert) are still valid.

its really something wrong with the program, this was discussed here before, i use the portable version and as soon as i open the program for the 1st time after a windows re-install it hijacks file types like flv and mkv, i fixed it by removing the folder of the portable version and cleaning the registry with ccleaner... nowadays i use the other gui with the mediainfo cli.

its a issue seen a lot with a google search, people dont say much because they can right click and restore association buut still mediainfo shouldnt do that
