I am attempting to use VirtualDub 1.9.9 to perform some minor edits of .avi files. I get the following error message when I try to open the file:
    VirtualDub Error
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'MPEG' (unknown)

VirtualDub required a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable.
I used a program called GSpot270a to determine that the video is MPEG-1 and that the Codec(s) are not installed.

I did Google searches for an answer as to what codec I should install and tried ffdshow. VirtualDub and GSpot report the same info.

    I'm using Windows 7 Pro, x64.

What should I install? Is there any other info I should post?

    Thanks.

VirtualDub is an .avi editor. MPEG-1 is not .avi. VirtualDubMod should be able to handle MPEG-1, but will output to an .avi format. You may want to try AviDemux or an MPEG editor.

Also....MPEG-PS is the output format to choose in AviDemux.

I guess I was too hung up on the fact that the file I want to work with has a .avi file extension. GSpot told me it is actually and MPEG . . . .

VirtualDubMod gave a similar error message, no joy there.

I've used VirtualDub in the past and I'm somewhat familiar with it. I like the ability to capture a frame to the clipboard. Does AviDemux have that ability? (If it does, I haven't found it.)

  5. MPEG 1 and 2 video can be used in an AVI container. You'll need a VFW MPEG decoder. ffdshow has an MPEG 1/2 decoder that will work with VirtualDub and AVI files. You may have to enable it manually: Start -> All Programs -> ffdshow -> VFW Configuration -> Decoder -> Codecs (left panel) -> MPEG in AVI (right panel).
