Some of the videos are not playing in MPC. Using Gspot, all the videos that are unable to play ARE WMV1, or WMV3 codecs. The "name" of the video is WMV7 or WMV9. I have windows media player 11 installed. I haven't tried playing these videos in a while so rolling back is not an option.

OK. Start over. If Gspot is reporting the files that won't play require WMV1/3, how are you getting information about WMV7/9?

You can reinstall WMP11, which should update/correct any WMV codec issues and/or download and install the WMV codec package from MS.

I did reinstall WMP11, I found and installed the codecs package from MS for wmp9. I used xplite and reinstalled WMP6.4.

The name that was reported with these codecs in gspot was "WMV7" and "WMV9".

I now rolled back my WMP11 to WMP9 and now WMP9 can play the files but I am not able to preview thumbnail image of the wmvs.

So, MPC is the only media player that cannot play these wmv's.

I have MPC output settings as directshow video -vmr9 (renderless) and under formats smv is set to directshow.

Oh, I tried reinstalling directx9 as well.

It was my understanding that you can only get thumbnail previews by having the correct codecs registered with WMP. Based on your other posts here, you may need to perform a little codec housekeeping.

I completely deleted and reinstalled WMP, directx9. What else can I do? I have VLC, MPC, and WMP...so how would I clean up codecs?

Thanks for advice but I'd prefer not to install any additional software.

A program such as CodecSniper should be helpful.
