Question about USB recording on the Panasonic DMR-EZ48V

Greetings! I recently found myself in a unique situation. My computer died and as a temporary replacement I have picked up a netbook (no dvd/cd drive). I want to back up my media onto dvds, as well as get some old boxing tapes onto dvds, and copy media from my friend's boxing dvds/vcds onto my own dvds. I purchased the EZ48V just this week because it seemed perfect for doing all of that. The jokes on me though. It appears that I can only copy pictures onto dvds via the usb drive; this was very misleading to me because none of the great reviews I read had even mentioned that I can't transfer and copy video files through the usb port.

My main question is this; is there any way that I can copy video files to dvd via the usb port on this recorder? If not, is there another setup that I can use to get this done?

While browsing through the site for information on the EZ48V I see that I pretty much picked one of the least reliable recorders available (funny I didn't see that in any reviews on other sites). Can someone recommend a good dvd recorder that will help me accomplish everything I mentioned above? Will I be able to do all that with just a good recorder, or will I need a little extra setup to get it done?

While I wouldn't say it's the least reliable of all DVDRs made(I'll leave that distinction for some unknown $99 brand) I can say for a fact that the EZ-48v is the least reliable DVDR that Panasonic has ever produced. It's extremely buggy and very frustrating to use, I would return it if at all possible. AFA your original request, copying from USB to DVD, I think a PC will be your only solution. Standalones are not geared for such a task, they will only play from their USB/SD/DV inputs, or at most they will copy photos.
