  1. I am a newbie, I have on my HDD a unencrypted copy of a DVD using CloneDVD2. I which to convert each episode into an XviD .avi file of ca. 700MB.

However each VOB file comtains unconnected episodes, so using avi.NET or AutoGK I can only obatin an XviD episode.avi of chunks of different eiposides!

How do you reorder the vobs correctly to enable the DVD to be split?

I assume you had anyDVD running in the background ? Otherwise you probably have not removed all the copy protection correctly.

If you have, and you have the entire video_TS folder, load the video into auto_GK using the ifo file, not the VOBs. The ifo describes which episodes are in when VOB files.

  3. OK got anydvd up and running. Then ripped mounted *.iso to new folder (preserving menus) with CloneDVD2 to give Video_TS + Audio_TS folders. Loaded VIDEO_TS.IFO into AutoGK and got error parsing file. Loaded VTS_01_0.IFO and got pop-up with select program, however it was all one program of 2 hours length (this is what I see in CloneDVD2 as well, no individual episodes). I then cloned with CloneDVD2 without preserving menus and achieved the same result.

Then your only option is to "tear it apart" into individual episodes/pieces...outputting each episode an an individual small DVD...then converting each one to an Xvid file. DVDShink would be my weapon of choice since it is already decrypted....hopefully.

Or VOB2MPG, then use AutoGK to convert the mpg files.

  6. If they're all in the same title - same PGC - then you have to decrypt the episodes separately. Open DVD Decrypter and set it for IFO Mode, rather than the default File Mode. If all the episodes are in the same 2 hour title, then select the number of chapters that correspond to each episode. If, for example, there are 20 (or 21) chapters and 4 episodes, then each episode contains 5 chapters. Select five at a time and decrypt each to its own folder before feeding them to AutoGK. It's a different way of doing what hech54 is recommending.

Why not convert the whole DVD to one avi file, then use a trimmer/splitter program to create the size clips you want? VirtualDubMOD should be great for that.

Hint: download FDShow codec and it will show up in video options in most conversion programs and gives easy access to all the video codecs within the program, and then stays set by default each time you set it.

I like manono's suggestion. Do note that DVD Decrypter is difficult to find these days as the author was given an "offer he could not refuse" where if he agreed to abandon the code, he would not be sued by a very litigious company involved in DVD production. DVD Decrypter is NOT available on the Video Help website, so you need to look around the internet to find it.

Finally, note also that some DVDs cannot be decrypted correctly by DVD Decrypter. The odds are pretty good that this won't be a problem for you as most TV show DVDs don't use the newer disc protection methods that came out after DVD Decrypter was abandoned, but I can't guarantee you that there is zero chance of this happening.

Because that would be ridiculously tedious!!

You can rip a dvd to an ISO then open it in something like FairUse Wizard and select all the episodes you want to encode, chhose the settings you want them to be then hit go and it will encode each episode 1 by 1 into separate files.
