hello there
Here is the thing, i got myself a new sony hdr-cx116, which records on avchd format, now, i would like to transcode these files to avi so i can easily share them.
i've been trying to accomplish this by using sony vegas, i've tried many different templates and spent countless hours only to find out the result is not what i expected.
I recently stumbled upon this site (crvix.com) which was not what i was looking for, but in some way, it helped, as far as i understand this person shoots some of the videos by himself, and then transcode them so he can upload them
if you pay attention, you will see some of videos are been shot in HD, then transcoded to avi, which is what i would like to do.
this person said it was possible to edit and transcode using vegas, something i was unable to do, after a while he would not reply to my emails anymore.
now, my questions are very simple:
1 - can i transcode mts files to avi, still keeping the full hd format?
if so, please tell me how, in details...
2 - if N°1 is not possible, can i transcode the mts files with some other software to be later edited using vegas or open source software???
i would also like to know specific details about the template i should use on vegas, so it can render at is best
i must confess i do not have a lot of experience with vegas, so i dont really understand everything, but i do learn quick.
in the past i've been dealing with all kinds of video formats but specially avi, i was using tmpgenc mostly, until i was introduce to vegas.
my machine is a bit old (pentium iv) but still fights the good fight, but could this be part of the problem??? i do not have space trouble, more than 4tb to spare.
i also most say i live in belgium so my way is the pal way...
i think that's about it, i really hope someone could help me, im open to any suggestions
thank you very much in advance and i hope to hear from you very soon

avi isn't a format. it's a general term for a container of video. audio/video/interleave. you need to be more specific as to the type/codec you want to convert to. what is it going to be played on? the most common format right now is probably h264/mp4, as that's what youtube wants for uploads and uses for their videos.

thanks for the reply
i forgot about that, well i really dont know, what about xvid??? , the videos will mostly be played on computers so thats my main goal, as long as i keep the HD resolution and relative small files i really dont care about the codec...
what would you use?, have you seen the quality of these videos: crvix.com??? thats what i would like... -
ok that one seems to work.... but even when i selected the interlaced to progressive settings on vegas im getting an interlaced rendered video....
what am i doing wrong????
could you be so kind to tell me step by step how render a file on vegas, maybe i missed something, i feel stupid...
thank you -

wasn't deinterlaced well? in your project settings what do you have deinterlace set to?

that's about as bad as i've seen. looks like deinterlace method was set to none. try interpolate fields. vegas can't get rid of all of the artifacts no matter what setting you use, as it's just not good at deinterlacing. there are other methods but you would have to pre-process all the video before importing to vegas.
pretty much why i always shoot HDV 30p. makes for good online video and interlaced dvd also, as both fields from each frame are recorded at the same time.--

You need a deinterlace strategy for your work flow
You can deinterlace before you import to Vegas*, during import to a 25p progressive project template**, or use an 1920x1080i interlace project timeline and deinterlace on export***. You would do the latter if you also wanted to export a higher quality 1080i for Blu-Ray or other player.
* externally deinterlace in VirtualdubMod, avisynth, or Handbreak with decomb setting.
** be sure project deinterlace setting is set to "interpolate fields"
*** this would be an AVCHD 1080i project setting. Export AVCHD 1080i for Blu-Ray. Then you have two options for h.264
1. Use Vegas export (will interpolate fields to frames)
2. Convert AVCHD 1080i to 25p with avisynth or Handbreak with decomb or deinterlace setting.Last edited by edDV; 22nd Jul 2010 at 18:26.

well, i select the region of the video, then right click and go to properties, then i go to order of field option and select: none progressive scan the rest i don't touch
after that i go to properties of the project, i select the 1920 x 1080 25.000fps template (custom), again, order of fields is set to none, progressive scan, then fps: 25.000, pixel format 8 bits, render quality: the best, under that one: gausian, then elimination of interlaced method: blend fields
am i missing something??? -

don't set the project to progressive. set it to interlaced like the source files. set "deinterlace method" to interpolate fields. then edit/render to progressive output.
the way you did it combined both fields of every frame into one without deinterlacing.--

I agree. I edit in the native camcorder format (or a digital intermediate), then encode several ways on export.
Sometimes deinterlacing before edit is required for projects intended primarily for internet or other extreme compression or when the primary source is progressive and the interlace video is suplemental.Recommends: Kiva.org - Loans that change lives.

Hey guys
Guess what???
I did it... or WE DID IT actually, thats why it took me a while to post back, i finally got it working
the whole issue goes around the input and output of the format file, as you well pointed it
now, i understand, i was telling vegas the input video was progressive when in fact it is interlace
i am so happy now, i have a template using AVC codec to share HD videos on face... and another template using AVCHD codec to edit and keep what it looks to me their original quality, and using the mp4 container.
at first i had trouble with AVCHD codec, trying to transcode the raw videos, vegas would simply crash, so i had to use the internet version (AVC) but then i downloaded the "e" version of vegas and problem solved.
i am extremely happy with the results, i will even make a tutorial out of this to share with my friends
thank you so so much guys
