Hello all,
I need to convert about 1800 DVDs, which have been converted to a single VOB containing the video, audio and subtitle streams, to an MPEG-2 Transport Stream (.TS) file _with_ subtitles so that VLC can play the file and display the subtitles (as it can with the .VOB file).
tsmuxer can do the video and audio part, but not the subs. Same apparently with ProjectX.
Any idea on how to do this?
Thanks in advance,
Christian.

I don't have the answer but try this forum. The author makes a related product, Vob2MPG. If it won't do what you need maybe he can give a pointer what to look for or how to do it.

I don't think transport streams support subtitles in the same manner as VOBs. The closest thing would be closed captions (or maybe teletext, living in the US, I'm not sure about that), but adding them requires professional tools.
As I understand it, subtitles may be placed in a separate file, which VLC can play with the transport stream. -
That's right. I believe you'll have to extract the subs and keep them external.

VLC does seem to have a bug with respect to playing external subtitles with transport streams. External subtitle files work fine when playing .mpg files.
I don't know of a reason to prefer .ts files to .mpg files unless one is streaming the video over a network. I am using VLC 1.05, and Media->Streaming->File allows the selection of an external subtitles file, so it may be possible to stream the external subtitles, but since I don't have a home network, I can't test how it works.Last edited by usually_quiet; 21st Jul 2010 at 12:01.
