A friend of my said he could rip a DVD movie from his cd-drive, he doesn't own a dvd-drive.
Can this be done with any software?

You do need a DVD-ROM drive in order to rip DVD movies. The reason why is because the lasers between the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives are that the dvd drive uses a denser laser and thus being able to read the data on the disc.

heh...makes you wonder why they even created DVD-ROMs in the first place since CD-ROMs can read/rip DVDs
