So I have finally started to like streaming videos to my ps3 and xbox 360 from my pc. I've always been one to have a physical disc or attached harddrive for watching videos but conversion times just grate at me.
So I decided to test if I could stream a video file off of a dvdr on my pc to my xbox 360. I popped in a disc with some mkv files on it and added the drive to my tversity folder list. I popped on my 360 and there it was! It played just fine. Though the seeking was a little finicky but then again it seems like seeking is a little hit or miss while streaming regardless of how you do it (FYI I am streaming wired through a router not wireless).
If I were to do this more frequently than streaming off an internal harddrive are there any potential problems? Would it effect the dvd rom drive at all on the pc? Would the read rate be a problem on the laser?
The reason I am interested in going this way is I have already archived a lot of video collections from the net and other sources onto dvd r (everything from mkv to ogm). I'd hate to have to recopy them and clog up my harddrive. If I can simply stream them off the disc I copied them to that would be great.
So is this an ok route to go? Are any of you out there doing this same thing? Have you killed any dvd drives doing this? Or is it normal wear and tear? This is still 1x read rate since I'm watching it in real time over the network right?
Comments are welcome.....

It should not put any extra wear on the drive than watching the videos locally on your monitor. Seeking might be an issue, but as you say, it can be hit and miss when streaming anyway. So long as tversity is happy to have assets in the library that are on removable media, I can't see any major issues, so long as the PC isn't being used for anything else while streaming. I could see playback being interrupted if Windows Explorer was opened on the PC while streaming, as it would check and read the optical drive.

I know dvd drives are really inexpensive these days. I just wanted to make sure there isn't some red flag I should be checking out before doing this too frequently. Just to be on the safe side I think I'll use my dvd drive to read the dvdrs instead of my bluray rom drive. I think bluray read only drives are still considerably more pricey than simple dvd burners (dl at that tooDonatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?
