Every time I try and play a video in Firefox, I get a window asking me if I want to download the file or play it. I tick "Open with mpc-ch.exe and put a check mark next to "Do this automatically for files like this from now on" but the next time (and every time) that I click on awmv file, it propts me again to do the same thing. It can't remember what I tell it to do.

It doesn't matter what player that I tell it to use, it won't remember and I have to manually tell it what to do every time I want to play a wmv or asf file on the internet with Firefox.

Is there a registry trick to make it do what I want?

Try setting it in the Tools / Options / Applications dialog before selecting something to download/view.

No other problems and ccleaner is not installed.

All windows media files are set to play with MPC-HC but it acts like it's set to "always ask".

I've never liked the way that Firefox handled movies but it is better now than it used to be. Before, you had to download a movie before you could watch it. I guess you still do since it downloads everything to Windows Temp Files folder first and if you let your temporary folder get too full then Firefox takes forever to load.

OK, it doesn't seem to be a problem with Firefox but with certain websites (or with Firefox's ability to read certain sites script).

I tried multiple sites and the WMV files played automatically (well, after they had downloaded to the temp folder) in most sites.
