Get a Samsung F3 Spinpoint 2T hard drive which is much better than a Hitachi.
    Just my 2 cents!

Hitachi took over the IBM line of drives in 2002. The IBM deskstar drives then used to be known widely as 'deathstars' for their high failure rates. But Hitachi seems to be making more dependable drives these days. I've used a couple in the past few years with no problems, but I would also recommend the Samsung drives over the Hitachi drives.

If you don't mind a bit of reduced speed and some power savings, the WD 'Green' drives are also an option for a large HDD.

For me, the only thing that Hitachi has going is the price for the 2 tb hard drives. I bought one in the past but had 2 exchanges and a return finally because coincidentally they all had something loose when I shook them. And the drives were pretty loud when running.
As for Samsung, I bought a spinpoint f3 1 tb and the progress bar, during file transfer, freezes time to time after a few weeks of use.
I'd personally go with WD caviar blacks (haven't tried out a green), a bit on the pricey side but haven't had any problems with them.
But if I had to choose between Hitachi and Samsung I'd go with Samsung.

  5. I prefer the WD Caviar Black myself. If you're patient, NewEgg has specials on them from time to time. You might wait a good while if you're set on a specific size though.

I might mention that budz and redwudz have a good deal of experience with this.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!
