Hello, I am not sure where to post this. Before I start asking questions a little background:

The Sony PS3 is a blu-ray and UP-CONVERT dvd player. I have noticed a significant difference if I try to play a VOB file from a disc inserted in the drive as opposed to streaming it. The reason for this is I believe that the PS3 does "upconverting" if you play from a disc but does not do it for anything that is streamed to it or played off a thumb drive.

I have several DVD movies ripped to my computer. Say I stream the single VOB file that contains the movie Borat. If I burn it back to disc and play it on the player side of the PS3 the movie looks better. So I started thinking is there a utility that allows you to "up-convert" the file on disc?

It doesn't matter that the new file is no longer a VOB (since VOB is limited in resolution) or bigger in size. I have some experience with RipBot264. Can I read in a vob file and then adjust the settings so that the resulting AVCHD file is an "up-converted" video file? If so, what settings would I use (in Ripbot 264)?

I got a file cooking right now with CQ18 just to see what happens but I am not sure if that will do anything. There are many other settings in there that I am not familiar with. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Material played from a DVD in authored DVD format, or as straight MPG from a USB HDD or streamed to my PS3 via PS3 media Server all upscale equally well for me.

If you do want to upscale, simply resizing bigger is not the answer. A simple resize will just interpolate the (very many) missing pixels in the simplest manner possible, which will not give you the same quality image that you get from the PS3's upscaler.

Are you certain that video from all 3 sources go through the PS3 upscaler?

Aside from that is there a utility that can "upscale" a dvd 720/704×480 vob/mpg video stream as well as the PS3 upscaler?

You could look at Video Enhancer or Red Giant's HD upscaler. Video Enhancer is cheap, but expect the re-encode to take quite a while.

And yes, all three go through the PS3 upscaler. The TV receives all of them at 1080p. Blurays, on the the other hand, switch up and down depending on the material on them. IE the movie will be 1080p, but SD extras will go to the TV at 576i and the TV will have to upscale.
